Hi,
I'm a first time beardie owner. We bought George at 8 weeks old at a reptile show. He's now six months old. He's 16" long. I don't have a scale to weigh him, but until recently, I'd say he was nicely plump. The base of his tail is fat.
When we first got him, he ate like a champ. Salad (mustard greens, collard greens, escarole, various safe fruits) every day. Up until about two weeks ago, he ate 35 black soldier fly larvae in the morning, and 80-100 medium crickets a night.
Lately (last two weeks), he still eats his BSFL (with much less gusto) and only 10-20 large crix at night. He seems disinterested after the first few. No chasing, just scooping them up if they come near. This morning, he seemed disinterested in his BSFL, which he usually devours.
He spends most of the day in his hide. I tried to bathe him yesterday and he freaked out for the first time. Literally leaped over the side of the rubbermaid to get out. His eyes still look bright, but often when I peak into his hide, his eyes seem droopy with gray circles under them. Once he opens them, they look fine, just the same as always.
He is in a 40 gallon (really 50 because its high-- its the exterra large/tall terrarium) with a reptisun 10.0 tube 7-8 inches from his basking spot, no screen in between. Basking temp is 105 with digital probe and confirmation from laser temp gun. Cool side 77-81 degrees. Nighttime temps above 65.
If I take him out of his hide, he'll stay for a bit but makes his way back sooner rather than later. Poop has slowed from everyday to every couple of days. Poop is solid and formed (often in a puddle of clear water) with white urate, sometimes colored to reflect his vegetable intake. Crix dusted 5 times a week with repti-cal, two times a week with herpavite.
He still looks good, but just not his old self. He seems to eat less and less. Isn't he too young to brumate? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have no prob taking him to the vet, but it's below zero here in the Northeast and the vet is an hour away. I don't want to bring him out in temperatures like that unless I have to.
Thanks!
