Hey guys, im getting a little curious of this one and after Kazi's reaction to Phoebe (on opposite sides of the glass) I wondered how you actually pluck up the courage to introduce a male and female for breeding.

I know there are risks involved but how do you minimise these? Judging by Kazi's reaction to Phoebe, I do think he would be quite aggressive if we did ever decide to breed him - are there beardie who you would never pair off with a female? Can you tell by a male's reaction, through the glass, whether hes going to actually do the business or attack the female?

I had more questions but I cant remember now.... perhaps later!

Thanks

Some males are "more violent" breeders than others. Some females get bled a little in the process, but there is no way of knowing until you get the male in with a female.

When you do introduce, put the female in the male's cage with no cage furniture.

Thanks Jeff... its curiosity more than anything with me!! A friend asked if he could use our male to breed with his female but I said no, based on the fact that Im not prepared to take that risk when its someone elses beardie and I really dont think Kazi would be in any way 'gentle' with his girl!!

MissT it is not only that! You also have to be careful that you don't bring in any diseases from outside your home and make your beardie sick! Glad you said no.

How funny that you asked this question...I signed on to ask the very same thing!
My male and female are housed in their own tank next to each other...He seems very interested in her, and she responds by licking the glass when I home him up to the tank. I finally got over my fear and introduced them the other night face to face. I did it in a neutral location as was right with them in case Leo became aggressive...To my surprise he bolted right over to her, sat on her lower back and just kept licking her back...It was so cute. They would run in circles next to each other...I will mention that he kept nibbling on her spikes on her side, and she nibbled on his spikes on his head, but they were sweet to one another. Last night we had them out together again and they fell asleep cuddled next to each other
I posted a couple photos of their first "date"

I wanted to know the same thing too lol My daughter wants to breed Chimaira and Kinno in a yr or so. I'm scared to death to put them together. My daughter talked about making beardie breading armor to make sure her baby didnt get hurt.

Generally speaking you need an aggressive male to get most females to be receptive. Passive males may tend toward the "non-proven" type. Some need a little time seeing other males or females to get the hormones working double time. When they just lay on each other, it can be a sign of it just not being the right season for the male or the female. I have yet to own a "non-proven" male but I have heard they are out there. Some males are just picky about their mate, and will be selective, making some breeding plans foiled by the tastes of the male they own.

Last night I had them out again together...this time was very different than before. They were doing circles around each other and grabbing at each others backs and tails....is this normal pre- breeding behavior? :?:

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
