Introducing me and my beardie!

Our beardie, Blink, was my 10 yr old sons Christmas gift. You must be very excited, like my son is, to own such a cool pet! This site is a great resource for you and your parents (I checked your profile to make sure you were not an adult before I posted this). There's a lot of good information available online, not just on this site. However, there are many inconsistencies in some of the info. If you learn as much as you can from experienced, reputable and up to date sources then you can make educated decisions about Fred's care. There are pro's and con's to most everything in life, and the various things available for our beardies are not exceptions. Some things work well for others but maybe not for you. Some things are perfectly fine and safe for other types of reptiles, but not for beardies. We've had Blink for 6 weeks and I'm still tweaking things.

Thanks, blinksmama, this is hoopyscoops mom, I follow along on her forum posts. And I greatly appreciate your input and help! She is in love with her beardie, and it was disheartening to see that all the research we had done prior to purchasing him was dismissed by the pet store guy. So we began more research and I let her join this forum yesterday, because there was so much good information to be found.

After you offer 10, if he eats them all, do you add 10 more until he stops eating, or 10-15 minutes has passed? If not, you need to make sure he is eating until HE stops, not until you stop offering. As for taking them back out... when I feed crickets, I take out all of Max's tank furniture. It makes it much easier to collect them. You can also try feeding in a separate container, although some beardies won't eat outside of their viv.

I keep offering until they stop. Just 10 at a time is eaiser. I just feed cosmos and i fed him 10 he ate them and then i gave him 10 more as so on. I also take out the stuff.

No, we add more if we see he is still eating them. When he just kind of sits there we stop adding them and wait about 15 minutes and remove the ones he has not eaten. I like the idea of feeding in a separate container that makes it much more manageable.

Yea, it's a good idea for you and me, but he may have a different idea about that. :lol: Max will never eat in a separate container, unless it's roaches he is eating. He'll eat those pretty much anywhere.

You're very welcome! I also did quite a bit research before we bought Blink. I'm still learning, I did the same thing with all my pets. I don't like to just listen to people (even doctors) and obediently follow the herd. I question everything and like to know the "why's" and science behind popular opinions. Even the research I've been reading, I actually go to the footnotes and read the researchers info source :lol: I hope my boys will be the same way.

Caleb and I have been weighing and measuring Blink once a week and charting his growth, and taking a lot of pictures It's fun seeing how much he's grown. We like to guess what his newest numbers will be, and see who's closet It's a great way to spend time together. He is also the cricket counter when we feed Blink

If you are looking to get a tank look around your local craigslist or wanted ads. I found a good deal on my tank on craigslist. It was $40 plus all of the other things it came with ( a hide, food and water dish, and a light lamp.) It was pretty awesome considering how much I would've paid for all that by themselves. Hope this helps ya.

Alright. Update time, we got the new light, some new decorations for his tank,and more crickets. but we still haven't been able to get a tank that's under 100 dollars. I'm really worried about my little guy.

check when petco does their $1 a gal sale, and you could pick up a 40 gal breeder tank for $40 bucks!

Just wanted to put a funny update we have noticed about Fred. We started giving him more crickets at a time and 3 times a day, but he would only eat a few at each feeding. Maybe 2 or 3. Then he would climb to the very top of his cactus and stay there. We would get out the crickets and try again later. Well, the funny thing is, he likes to hunt his food, but only one at a time. So we drop them one at a time, he chases it. Eats it. Then he looks up at us to give him another. It is really funny. And, if more than one falls in with him he just sits and stares at us. And we have to take them out and start over again. It is soooo funny! :lol:
