I work at a pet store, so i know a good bit about beardie, or enough. I have everything i need for his habitat, and he gets mealworms, crickets, and fresh lettuce every day. Hes very healthy, and no where near lethargic. His gauges say the temp and humidity are fine. Ive had him about ten days now. When i took him home, he sat on my shoulder, when i held him, he was fine. He'd close his little eyes when i pet him. Then, one day, i was on my bed holding him, and my 12 yr old sister jumped on my bed. And it scared him, obviously. Well, he took off like a rocket. and he hit my side table and then the floor. I caught him easily, but now... when i try to pick him up, he runs, and when i grab his bowls to fill them, he backs up and yesterday, he hissed at me! He also black beards when i simply lean down to watch him. Ive been working with them, and there would be like 6 or 7 in a tank and ive never ever been hissed at, im assuming hes threatened, but idk what else to do, to make him not scared of me? it really worries me... any ideas??

Oh Chels....

Don't take offense but what you have been taught at the petstore is for the most part.........wrong.

There are a few things fromt his post that need some addressing....

1. never ever feed mealworms! Not even as treat. They have entirely too much chitin that will cause impaction that is often fatal.

2. Ditch the lettuce! It's full of almost no useful nutrients that they need. Visit beautifuldragons.com for a list of goods and bads for foods.

3. He is probably scared due to relocation stress. Give him some time and he will come around. Make sure that you are moving very slowly and deliberately. try to never come over the top of him but instead approach him with your hand below him and in front of him.

4. I would like to go ever the rest of your set up with you because I fear that there are many issues that we commonly see with petstores....Be sure to answer them with as much detail as possible so we can get you and your beardie on a great, long, and healthy road!

How old is your dragon?
How long have you had your dragon?
How long is your dragon?
What is the sex of your dragon?
What size enclosure do you have your dragon in?
What type substrate do you have on the bottom of your tank?
Do you use UVB lights?
If so, Is it a coil, compact, fluorescent tube, or Mercury Vapor bulb?
What is the brand name and number of your bulb? Wattage (if MVB)?
How old is your UVB bulb?
How close can your dragon get to the UVB?
Do you use a separate basking bulb? What kind and what is the wattage?
What are the basking temps?
What is the cool side temp?
Do you take the temps with a stick on thermometer, a digital thermometer with a wire and a probe end or a temp gun?
Where exactly are you taking your basking temps?
Do you use a heat rock or heat pad?
What do you feed your dragon? Please be specific.
How often do you feed and what time do you feed (morning, afternoon, night)?
Do you gutload (feed) your crickets, worms, etc?
Do you use vitamin or calcium supplements? What brand(s)? How many days a week do you use each of them?
Is your dragon having regular bowel movements (poops)?
Do you bath your dragon? How often?
Do you mist your dragon or offer water other than in the bath?
Does your dragon share an enclosure with another dragon?
Have you gotten a vet check and fecal done?

How old is your dragon? Im not sure exactly, hes a baby though, but the biggest at the store at the time.

How long have you had your dragon? ten days exactly.

How long is your dragon? about 7 inches, tip of nose to tip of tail.
GetAttachment.aspx

What is the sex of your dragon? someone at the store felt him, and said hes a boy, but being a baby, its harder to tell, supposedly.

What size enclosure do you have your dragon in? 20 gallons.

What type substrate do you have on the bottom of your tank? alfalfa meal, i bought a bearded dragon kit and thats what came in it, at the store we use sand, which really pisses me off, because even i know that as babies they shouldnt be in that.

Do you use UVB lights? Yes, a Desert 50 UVB, a day blue bulb, and a night black heat bulb... so, three lamps in all, also coming with the kit.

If so, Is it a coil, compact, fluorescent tube, or Mercury Vapor bulb? The UVB is a coil bulb

What is the brand name and number of your bulb? Wattage (if MVB)? "Zilla" is the brand name. Its 20 Watts, and says Desert 50? And that its only for reptiles.

How old is your UVB bulb? Its only been used for the past ten days.

How close can your dragon get to the UVB? It sits on top of his cage, through a wire mesh top, and because of the basking thing i have, he sit about half way to the top

Do you use a separate basking bulb? What kind and what is the wattage? Yes, the day bulb is also a "Zilla" and is 150 Watts and the black heat lamp is also "Zilla" and is 50 Watts.

What are the basking temps? 90 -105 F

What is the cool side temp? 80 - 85 F

Do you take the temps with a stick on thermometer, a digital thermometer with a wire and a probe end or a temp gun? The thermometer is a dual one, it does humidity and temp, so i suppose it'd be one with the stick

Where exactly are you taking your basking temps? The thermometer sits on the glass ? Ill try to get a picture to show you
GetAttachment.aspx

* The bulb to the very left is the 20 Watt UVB, the middle one is the 50 Watt black heat bulb, and the one on the right is the 150 Watt day blue bulb, the two bowls on the right hand side are the lettuce and mealworms bowl, and the orange bowl on the left is the water bowl, the basking tree thing was picked because its also the one we used in the store

Do you use a heat rock or heat pad? No

What do you feed your dragon? Please be specific. Mealworms, Small crickets covered in a vitamin/calcium supplement made for beardies, and a spring mix of greens, its got baby romaine, tango, and radicchio greens in it

How often do you feed and what time do you feed (morning, afternoon, night)? I feed him crickets at around 2 or 3 pm, and give him fresh greens and mealworms about two hours later

Do you gutload (feed) your crickets, worms, etc? Yes, my crickets are eating this "Fluker's Orange cricket diet", and powdered cricket food at the store

Do you use vitamin or calcium supplements? What brand(s)? How many days a week do you use each of them? Yes, " 'Repashy Superfoods' Bearded Dragon Calcium Plus " I use it everyday, when i feed him crickets

Is your dragon having regular bowel movements (poops)? Yes

Do you bath your dragon? How often? No, the only time we bathe them at the store is if they become compacted, from the sand of course.

Do you mist your dragon or offer water other than in the bath? He has a bowl, that came with the kit, that has fresh water everyday

Does your dragon share an enclosure with another dragon? No, he did at the store though

Have you gotten a vet check and fecal done? No, ive only had him a week

Hopefully ive answered everything okay...

Actually, sounds like you have a decent idea of how to care for your bearded! Just a few little things..

A. Switch to some more nutritious greens as opposed to a salad mix. Lettuces, while delicious, are actually mostly water and can cause diarrhea!
Collard Greens, Mustard Greens, Bok Choy, Turnip Greens, Endive, Escarole are all great options!
See this great nutrition chart for additional info on greens, veggies, and insects:
http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtreme.com/Nutrition.html

B. Ditch the mealies! I don't think they're as dangerous as some people think, but certainly not a good staple, as it's true.. They are high in chitin - The difficult to digest material that makes up an insect's exoskeleton.
For a small dragon, I recommend feeding small crickets or roaches. Phoenix worms, silkworms, and hornworms are also great.

C. No particulate substrates! Even alphalpha meal can be accidentally ingested.. Plus consider how unsanitary these substrates are? You could never get every last particle of poo when you spot clean - And a warm, now wet environment is perfect for bacteria and mold!
There are many better options, depending on your personal taste!
Repticarpet, tiles (laid in loose on top of newspaper for easy cleaning.), newspaper, shelf liner, butcher paper, and paper towel all work great and are easy to clean!

D. Beardies do need UVA and UVB! However, there is some evidence that coil UVA/UVB bulbs can have some negative effects on the health of a reptile, especially if a certain distance isn't maintained between them and the bulb. I'd do a quick search around the forum about coil bulbs - You'll see a lot of negative information.
Some of the most commonly used bulbs are the strips and mercury vapor bulbs. Particularly the Reptisun 10.0 and the Megaray MVB.
Remember - A general 12-18 inches depending on the bulb is required between the dragon and the bulb, but they must be able to get within that range to get it's full benefit!

E. Soak, soak, soak! Especially when in poor health, it's important to give regular soaks. My adults are soaked twice a week, younger ones get almost every other day. It is important, even if they don't drink, as they will absorb water through their vent.

I read in Reptiles Magazine that mealies are okay once or twice a week. Ill stick to that, being that he had basically been raised on them so far. Like i said, i do feed him crickets, many many a day. And the alfalfa meal, yes, it can be ingested, but that is common for most others, and as far as im concerned, the alfalfa meal isnt harmful to him. And as far as the soaking goes, he has a bowl for that, he wont let me near him to even pick him up, i think im just going to give it time and let him adjust to his new home, because i know, by looking at him, he is healthy.

The issue with substrate like this in not only ingestion, but it IS a bacteria breeding ground. You will find that most everyone here will give you great advice, and no offense, but the combined knowedge of most here is far beyond what you may have learned at a pet store. Again, no offense, but pet stores only allow thier critter to survive, the typical beardie owner allows thier kids to thrive. You will find that this community is very very helpful. But if you choose to ask for advise, then disreguard it, some may become angry with you. Welcome.

Who the hell disregarded it? I spent like an hour answering all those questions up there? And got no feedback from that.

Perhaps you didn't see Lena's reply. I do believe her reply qualifies as "feedback" As for disreguarding it, is it not that obvious? I quoted you in my last reply as
"And the alfalfa meal, yes, it can be ingested, but that is common for most others, and as far as im concerned, the alfalfa meal isnt harmful to him. "
(again I refer to Lena's reply, section C.)
To some, this may be considered as disreguarding.
Every one here will give you advice, especially when you ask for it. Most of their expericance comes first hand. I lost a beautiful dragon because of impaction... and many have. If you can't or do not want to learn from others mistakes, then maybe you are better off just accepting the answers instead of replying with "I am not going to do what you suggest" Otherwise, you are just waisting yours and their time. The good news is that most people here are here to help and serve... the dragons, not the ignorant owner, meaning, should something happen or you need more help with something the pet store didn't teach you, feel free to ask.
Please forgive me if this may seem harsh, but I am just maintaining the mood you set.

We're only here to help and offer our advice based on our own experience. Many of us are breeders and seasoned hobbyists.

If you're going to be defensive then maybe you shouldn't have asked? :|

It's kind of like "Hey I have a new bearded dragon, I need some help!" .... "Screw you, I don't need your help!" ... Kind of contradictory, don't you think?

And counterproductive!

You stick with feeding mealies and the alfalfa. when your dragon is deathly ill hit us back up in the health section.

Hello... Good morning if I may I am Bentley's Mommy and I have had him/her since aug 14th. I have been coming to this site since recieving my baby and have had nothing but great help on here and I finally joined yesterday.
You people on here are only here to help others like myself who are a little or very well under experts in Beardies and if others think they know it all they can go somewhere else!!! I am sorry but I am new and I do need alot of help with my baby. I had a water dragon that I purchased for my son and upon buying he had little bubbles on his skin petshop telling me oh its normal hes shedding then marley stopped eatting all together got very nasty with me and children took him to my vet >heaven sent by the way i love him< told me our little man was bit by another lizard/animal and developed a blood infection, rott mouth, under weight, losing toes like crazy and teeth parts of his gums etc... he hung on till first week of august then past away. Threatened to take Petland Discount to court for everything vet bills etc... So after my vet speaking to them and explaning that he will go to court with me from the injuries Marley had and infections these were prior issues before purchasing they offered to give us another Lizard. My son did not want to get another water dragon so our vet suggested getting a Beardie and that what we did and now I have little Bentley.
I come here afew times a day to see and learn new things being I am a new mommy to a beardie and I find you people a GREAT and LOVING help to me and my family Thank you all for everything you do your post advise messages etc...

I would also like to suggest you return the bulbs that came with the kit. The coil or compact UVB bulbs are very dangerous, as the amount of UVB given off can be irregular and these types or bulbs have been know to cause lethargy, loss of appetite and eye issues among others. You really need, as said before, a reptiSUN 10 tube light, or an Arcadia if you are in Europe.

They also need a BRIGHT WHITE basking light, just a household bulb will do the job perfect, as their little eyes need to be protected from the UVB. If you dont, you will find your baby will stare at the UVB, no their basking spot and can do damage to themselves.

Unless you have a very cold house (below 65 at night) you dont need a night light either. These can actually disrupt their sleep, because yes they can see the light, both red and blue/purple. They need darkness to sleep properly. Again, disrupted sleep results in a very grumpy, lethargic dragon, who will not eat etc. If you do need extra heat at night, you need a ceramic heat emmiter which gives off heat but no light.

If you make the changes suggested your baby will be fine, but if you carry on, he may well get worse. All the info given is in the best interests of our scaly friends, which is why these debates often get heated. Again, many chose a particle substrate, if this is what you want you need kitchen towel until he is about 7 months, then you can swap to washed kids play sand, no other. You must also make allowances, such as NEVER feed in the tank, replace ALL the sand every week etc, which is a faf, and as mentioned, a bacterial breeding ground, but its your choice to make, not ours.

If you take anything from this, please change the light and dont feed lettuce or mealies, both are bad for them, you ca ring the local vet to check, but they are. If you want to treat him, get small butter worms.

i really hope you take some advice on board, we are just responding to a plea of help from you.

Hi chels710, welcome to bd.org! You did a terrific job filling out the questionnaire. I'm glad the petstore beardies have you to look out for them but have to agree, most petstores take 'enough' care but if they were to keep the beardies to adulthood, there would be problems...

I have to agree with the advice on the substrate and the lighting, I know it's what you've been using and he's fine for now but I would hate to see something happen later! It took months for us to see our beardies closing their eyes and acting lethargic due to the lighting... and once we switched out for the Repti-Sun 10.0 we saw great results! I couldn't see the pics of your thermometers but if they are the kind that stick to the glass, those are very inaccurate, it's best to take temps with a digital temp-gun or a digital thermometer with a probe. We picked up the therm with the probe for under $12 at Wal-Mart. The night light is not needed unless your beardie's tank will be under 65 degrees.

The right environment can really help a beardie's attitude! I hope you take the advice for the worth it has, I learned the wrong way, my beardie looked perfectly healthy and then one day! Issues! And that's when I found bd.org. I hope your beardie comes around and lives a happy, healthy life and that you accept that we are here to help, and sometimes when advice is rejected out of hand, yes, feelings get hurt. Nobody wants to hurt your feelings, we just want to see your beardie healthy!

You're feeding mini-mealies right not big ones? If so a couple times a week is probably OK especially if the rest of the diet is varied.

Did you have a change to check out the nutrition sheet? Mustard greens, Dandelion greens, Collard greens and Turnip greens are all very healthy alternatives to regular lettuce.

I had to make many changes to our setup, some of it wasn't cheap (like the lighting) and some of it was cheap, quick and easy! (like changing out the substrate to non-adhesive shelf liner which incidentally is quite easy to clean daily and to change as well!)

Have you seen your beardie spend time in his water dish? Most beardies do not drink or soak in a water dish in their tank (although we too keep one in there just in case) and bathing is how they get most of their hydration, nice warm water to cover their vent, as that is where they bring the water in...

I'm sorry your beardie had a bad experience and is not warming up to you yet, but sounds like you're on the right track to bringing him around. I would try to set up a nice, warm bath in the evening and maybe after that he will feel more relaxed you may even be able to wrap him up for a cuddle... of course it sounds like it may take a few days until you can pick him up and try if you are willlng!

Thanks for the advice. Yes i feed him small mealies like two or three times a week. Ive been giving him more crickets than anything, and greens and fruits every other day or so. He just started molting the other day also, for the first time since ive had him. Ive been misting him, is that what im supposed to be doing? He seems to like it. I think im going to switch to something simple, like paper towels, as far as newspaper goes, is the ink bad for them, like if it gets wet or something? And as far as him warming up to me, eh, i hold him as many times in a day as i can, but it never lasts long, because once he black beards, i put him back down. I dont want to overly annoy him i guess.
