I got my 4 year old Beardie boy at the beginning of Jan from his former owners that had him for 4 years. he is about 16 in long.
-He is in a 55 gal tank with ceramic tile floor.
-He has a Zilla Desert series 50 T8 Flourescent tube for his UVB , a 75 w zoomed repti basking spot lamp for day time and a black 75 w bulb for nite. During the day (4:30 am - 8:00 pm) he has the uvb and day lite on,when the day lites go out the black bulb comes on for nite heat. There is no glass between him and the lites, and they hang approx 12in above the floor of the tank. He has a resin branch that he can climb onto get closer to the lite, but not enough to burn himself.
-He eats between 4 and 8 superworms dusted in calcium/vitamin powder in the morning, and 30 min later he goes in the bathtub for a swim and to poop. I leave him with a salad during the day with a combination of soaked Repcal pellets, maybe strawberry or strawberry leaves, maybe pieces of berry, or green pepper, or tomato or spinich or turnip greens or other veggies/fruits as we have them - he seems to like to lick apple slices. Sometimes I offer crickets either live or freeze dried, but he does not seem crazy about them.
In the evening when I get home from work, he'll eat another 3 or 4 worms and then got to sleep when his lite is out. He's like a chicken: out go the lites, out goes the Beardie. Is that normal? And he is a sound sleeper too!
The problem: he seems to fall over on his back a lot. He'll be on the log and then lying on his back, kicking and trying to get up. Sometimes he seems to get trapped, and I worry about him getting stuck and not being able to right himself. Is that normal? Today my husband found him on his back and righted him, but he didnt seem so good. When I got home an hour later, he still didnt seem too good, but he ate 3 superworms and semed ok. I put him in the tub since hubby said he was gaping while stuck. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance!
