How long can you keep a reptisun before it needs changing?

Exactly what the title says, we have him with a reptiglo right now its unfortunately the wrong one as its a 5 and I thought it was ok. Reading through this site I realise he's not getting sufficient rays from it and so I have just ordered the reptisun 10 so things will be better for the little guy. The question is because both me and my boyfriend have seen everywhere reptisun is the one to use and that anything else is a cheap and useless substitute for lighting. Ok I may have adlibbed there a bit. Anyway he thinks its 8 months for replacement and I thought I read 12 months, I definitely read it last longer that the turtles reptiglo which is 6 months. Can anyone set us right so we get the next one at the right time and don't upset the little fella???

I would like to know this as well. A lot of people say 6 months to change a reptisun but the package says 12 months. It's hard to believe that the reptisun company would want you to wait MORE time before buying another bulb from them, seeing as they are a business and would like to make as much money as possible. I'm only saying this is because, as much as it pains me to say (and the fact that I'll probably get backlash for this), but I think some people on this site are guilty of "over-caring" for their bearded dragons. Seeing as bulbs = money and I don't have money to just throw around, I would really like to get the most out of each reptisun and not switch them out every 6 months if they can last longer.

The over-caring comment isn't mean to be rude at all. If there is any scientific or proven reason why you should switch your bulb at 6 months then please let me know... I'm just thinking people say "6 months" just to be on the extreme safe side.

The bulb itself will last for 12 months but the effectiveness of the UV wears out around 6 months.. I would rather "Over Care" than "Under Care" for something that I love and have spent tons of money and endless hours caring for.. www.petmountain.com is a great website to order the Reptisun from.. They have very competitive prices along with shipping.. :D

Agreed, and by my comment I didn't mean to incinuate that I'm not giving my dragons great care. I love both of my lil guys, but they are expensive... so I'm trying to figure out any ways I can make money last with them. Anyways thanks for the reply scarlett

Oh I completely understand.. These little boogers can be quite expensive for sure. .. I guess I've just always been taught that its always better to have too much of one thing than not enough... So I pretty much live by that rule.. Hopefully u live in the US and can take advantage of Petmountain's prices b/c they are def the lowest I have found..

Thank you for the response. That stands us both corrected.

With regards to the over caring, I'm probably one of the worst when it comes to my Kari and I've definitely tried not to mother Bra'tac as much however I don't think its going to last long as it was we went away for 24 hours the other day and I couldn't wait to get back and check his temps as for some strange reason we can't get the heat mats to give out as much as we want or rather need them to get and have to get the heating going to move it up.

Slave2Scarlett (love the name btw) we unfortunately reside in the UK so I am going to have to shop around for his next bulb, the current one is coming in from ebay just to get it here and it was the cheapest I've seen so far.

However if as Deh said anyone knows of any reports of any other findings it would be good to know as I remember my turtle getting a soft shell due to me not changing the uvb every 6 months, I hadn't had him quite a year yet but at the time the report to say once every 6 months had just come out and my vet shouted at me over it I was totally taken aback especially when he said the report had only just came out.

Deh I also think they can be expensive but when comparing them to my turtle I just realise how easy I have it with him as all he needs is lights and his food is cheap, but I wouldn't take back getting Bra'tac now he's awesome.

I saw you post up about that one in another thread actually cat and looked at it on a site, cant remember which and it looked the same price as the repti sun so i just got that but your site is great for the price, is the postage reasonable, either way I think that may be his next light as the site in the states is good but the postage is bound to make it unlikely as a candidate compared to your site. Wish I had known about it this morning before I dished out £30 for repti sun, the local pet store has it for £40 so it seemed a good price and yours seems so much better.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
