How do you measure

While lurking and reading and learning I have noticed that most peoples dragons are larger then mine while they are the same age. This leads me to believe I must be measuring wrong. I have one girl that I was told was born in May and she seems like she should be about 15 inches but when I pull out the measuring tape she is only 12! I thought I was doing it right but there is no way. Everyone else has beardies that are 6 months old and measuring 15-17 inches. She is nice and plump, very acitve, eats like a pig on greens and feeders (crickets, worms, greens).

So my question is how do you measure? Is there a technique? She was quite wiggly and didn't want us to measure her so it is very possible that we are incorrect but I am not getting concerned that our dragons are not growing right.

but dont worry about the Length if she is well fed she will grow
they all grow at different speeds
my juvie is14 inches long and 7 months old
my adult (who i rescued) grew two inches this year he is two years old and most of what you read says they stop growing after the first year
so dont worry

When measuring your beardie it is from tip of nose to tip of tail.
Not all beardies will grow at the same rate or to the same size.
I have a female Itty Bitty didn't grow at a fast rate an is barely 17 inches as an adult. At 6 months she was just under 11 inches.
One of my other females is barely 16 inches an adult too. But my other 2 adult females are over 20 inches.
My adult male is 22 inches and at 6 months was 18 inches.
On the other hand I have a 6-1/2 month old male that is over 20 inches long. :roll:
But then I have a 3 month old little boy that is under 9 inches.

It's very hard... no impossible to predict size of a beardie because so many things play into the equation.
Gene make-up, diet, husbandry........etc........

As long as your beardie is healthy that what really matters not size. :wink:

Ok thank you. Now I feel better. I have a male that is 6 months and I just measured him again and he is 14 inches. The female I spoke of earlier is now almost 13. But I have another female that is 6 months and barely 10! But she is fat! A little tubber. And then we aquired a German Giant red as red can be and not only is he a tub but he is 16 inches and only 6 months! He is the biggest sweetheart around. Do the girls normally grow slower then the boys? Oh and I have a girl with mbd she is 8 months now and she is barely 10 inches but that is because of the disease, I know. I also have realised that I get more acurate measurments with my soft tape measure then my husbands metal tape measurer.

Whoa Barbara! I just reread what you posted and you say you have a 6 month old that is over 20 inches. Is he a German Giant? That is so crazy. I thought they toped off at around 20 - 22 inches. Does that mean your guy is close to being done or he will be bigger then the norm? Does he eat like a horse?

PVT Blaze came from Irwin's Mom (Sizzlin Dragons) He has very hefty parents.
He isn't german giant just huge. :lol: He is actually brumating at 6 months.
He definitely eats like a horse. He was devouring close to 150 roaches before he went into brumation plus the wormy treats and 2 salads a day. So yeah he is a piglet. :lol: He has actually grown an inch sense he went to sleep. I'm very curious as to how much more he will grow. I know by looking at his parents that he will definitely put on some girth. Yeah! His parents are hefty both are very big breasted. :lol: Did you see his daddy?
What a hunk if I were a beardie I'd be after him. :laughing6:

Yeah, don't worry about the sizes. My two were both about 9 to 10 inches when they were six months old. Now they're 1 yr 2 mo and they're 16 and 18.5 inches, respectively.
