Hi Just got my Beardie yesterday

Hi the name is Tom and for a nice little present for myself, I decided to buy a Beardie from the local pet store down from me. I've always wanted one since I saw them when my brother bought his snake from there. I finally was able to afford one and I'm completely loving him. He's only about 2-3 months old(If I remember correctly) so he's not in overly big tank till I can buy him a new one(he's in a 15 right now), but I"m letting him get used to his surroundings. I'll be sure to post pics of Jagr when I get the chance to.

Hi, welcome to the forum and congratulations on your baby. What did you name him or her? Since petstores can give out some wrong info, would you like to fill us in on the UVB you're using, the type of thermometer and what you have on the bottom of your tank as a substrate? Just want to make sure everything is perfect for your new addition. :wink:

Well I went by what he told me I would need(since I was pretty much lost) and he actually didn't give me a UVB bulb. I of course was given a light for night and a basking light(which blew out today 5 minutes after the shop closed, go figure). As for the thermometer I'm currently using the thermometer my brother was using for his turtle(i can't remember what it actually is), but I've read some of the guides and am going to go find another more accurate today.

As for the substrate, it's currently crushed/ground walnut as I was told it was digestible so it wouldn't harm Jager(that's the name btw) if he did happen to eat any. The owner of the shop raises several of them at his house and I know my brother has never had a problem with his suggestions and I've heard the substrate I have should be ok from another owner I know. I'm going to possibly change that out depending on the other suggestions I get from the sight, which of course as a new owner(and someone would love to own several Beardies) I'm open to all and every suggestion.

The substrate is bad. Walnut shell is sharp and can harm your beardie. You need to get a reptisun 10.0, a reptiglo 8, or an MVB (mercury vapor bulb). If you choose to get the MVB don't use it in the 15 gallon. Your beardie has to be at least 10-12 inches away from one. The UV tubes are good too. I would upgrade to a bigger tank soon. Forgot to mention, as a new substrate you can use slate or ceramic tiles (what most of us use), repti carpet or astro turf, paper towels, newspaper, or non-adhesive shelf liner. Tile should be non toxic and non adhesive with some grip to it. Repti carpet should be plastic, the kind that looks and feels like grass is the best. The carpet made of felt isn't good. The fabric loops get caught on beardie's toes. Good luck!

Yea, I'm looking to change out the substrate. I mean I trust the guy has he as several reptiles that he keeps at his home and he hasn't steered my brother wrong when it comes to his snake and turtle, but at the same time it's getting irritating in itself cause the shells are dragged all over the place and getting into his salad and water dish(which i change daily). Do you have a good website or store that I can get those tiles at? Also I wanna get a bigger home now so I don't have to worry about it later and I was wondering what do you guys suggest, Jager is only about 7 or 8 inches, but I would like to give him as much room as I can so he can have some fun. I don't know if I have to order the vivs from my guy or if he has some but I didn't seem them in there when I went so if anyone knows of any good websites, that would be much appreciated.
