Barb,

Once he has a bowel movement for you, if it isn't particularly hard, and doesn't have any undigested pieces of crickets, or sand in it, then I think feeding him as much as he'll eat is a good plan. However, use common sense, and don't let him overstuff himself all at one time. Feeding him several small meals a day, as opposed to a couple of huge ones, is a very good idea, especially until he start going to the bathroom regularly.

Also, keep an eye on his urates when he goes, to make sure that they're not unusally large or very hard. Sometimes, after being very dehydrated, they will form urate plugs, where the urates come out in a hard lump, rather than in a crumbley white powder. Urate plugs can make it difficult for him to have a bowel movement, because they can partially block his vent area. If that happens, then you need to continue to get lots of fluid into him to break up the urates so that he passes them normally. You can either do this by bathing him frequently until his urates appear normal, or by giving him fluids from a feeding syringe. If he isn't thrilled about taking water from a feeding syringe for you, then try giving him some sort of low sugar juice, such as apple juice. Any sort of juices that you can find in the baby food aisle at the supermarket are usually low in sugar, but stay away from anything citrus, such as orange juice, as that tend to upset their stomachs.

From what you're describing, I would say that he's definitely on the mend, and that the worst is probably over! You're doing a great job with him.....keep up the good work!

He had me really concerned yesterday. He looked very uncomfortable and had no interest in the crickets at all. Saturday he was very happy to eat a few. Sunday he ate one. Yesterday none. I opened his mouth and popped in a wax worm yesterday. I gave him 3 or 4 syringes of water along with more soaks.

Was I ever glad to see poop today!!!!

Last night, the kids who used to own him, realized he was gone. What's worse than that??? The reaction from one of the girls when she found out he came to my house. "Ohhh noooooo she is going to be soooo mad at us for how skinny he is!" So they knew..... they absolutely knew.....

I also found out that James might be a Jane (?). I looked when I got him and swear I saw those 2 little bumps. Then again, I thought they had said he was a boy, and maybe made myself see something to confirm it?? But when my niece told her I changed his name, she was told he was a she.

I'm seeing nothing when I look now, but he wasn't being too cooperative for some reason either. Later tonight when my daughter gets home I'll take a picture and see if any of you might be able to help me out.

There is a BD that looks just like that at the pet store down the street that is there for boarding. I saw him and my heart broke. I gave the stupid kid working there a piece of my mind but unfortunately he wasn't in charge and never was in the reptile department. He just the go getter guy I guess. I don't know what to do.

If he's just boarding there, it's certainly the owner's fault and not the pet store. Hopefully the pet store owner will talk to the owner about the poor guy's condition.

If there's any way you could care for him, you might talk to the pet store owner.

I would let him/her know that I was concerned and that I'm sure he is as well. I'd see if he was going to talk to the owner about his condition. I'd tell him that if he talked to the owner and could convince them to give him up, I'd take him. I'd probably offer to pay for the boarding too. I imagine it couldn't be that much and it would show that I wasn't just out to get a free beardie.

I'm surprised the store had boarding animals out for the public to see?

My update in neither good or bad really.

He's still hanging in there. He's putting on a tiny bit of weight according to the scale.

His poos are not regular. He did last Tuesday and Wednesday, and then not again until today.

I am offering him super worms, crickets and wax worms. He might eat one or two a day.
Sometimes when he eats a super, he'll get it in his mouth, and then spit back out. I ordered some small supers from mulberry farms last night. I'm hoping they'll be easier for him. I also ordered some butter worms.

I got some Repta-aid emergency aid on Friday.

I had cut back on what I was syringe feeding him, hoping he'd start to eat more on his own, but it's not happening like I'd hoped.

He's still getting bathed every day. One day last week he went over to his water bowl and drank and drank and drank. I took that as a good sign.

Have you had a fecal done on one of those poop samples yet? Also careful with the butters and waxies dont want to get him hooked. Phoenix worms would be great, super high in calcium and also are supposed to be good for some parasites. I dont blame the carelessness of those kids for this, I blame the parents the let this happen. Lets just hope the kinds can learn a lesson before history repeats itself.

Well yesterday I tried a different approach. I took his basking log out. Without that, he actually walked around and explored a bit. In his exploring, he munched a few pellets, maybe sampled a green, and ate a couple worms.

It worked today too. His appetite isn't great, and he gives up pretty easy if he doesn't get it the first or second try, but it's progress.

I have not had a fecal run. I thought I had read it's not good to do in that first few weeks as they settle in? That they normally have a small amount of parasites anyway, but the stress can make them shed more? If I misread that, I'll get a fecal done right away.

He did like the butter worms. Well the smaller ones. He tried a big one, but spit it back out. Are the phoenix worms big? He doesn't seem to want anything too large.

Well it's been 6 weeks now since I got James. This week he has decided it's time to live. :)

He is eating everything in sight. It was touch and go for awhile. He would sort of eat if I syringed it. He would pick at live stuff, but never reliably.

I got the phoenix worms a few weeks ago. He liked them a lot. I started to toss a superworm in there here and there with the phoenix. At first he wouldn't be fooled. He wouldn't touch them. Now, he gobbles them up as fast as I can put them in.

He practically takes the syringe out of my hand now. He loves applesauce so I mix it with the squash for him.

Today he ate a good size handful of salad, several super worms and has munched on the pellets on and off all day.

He has also been very active this week. Previously I'd have to take out his basking log to get him to move around.

This has been a turning point week for him. I'm so relieved. I was afraid he just didn't have enough fight in him.

This was the night I brought him home.

This was tonight. Better, but he still has a way to go. With the appetite he's had the last 3 days, I'm sure it won't take long!

Soo soo glad to hear he is finally accepting all your efforts and relized he does have someone and something to live for. You have been so patient and persistant in your efforts, some would have given up on him after two weeks. Me personally I keep going no matter how long it takes, just like you. Stay strong and tell James I'm glad he is eating like a big boy now.

He's going to have a proper beardie shape in no time. I'm glad to hear he's started to perk up and is eating well for you now. Go James!!!

Oh my goodness I cannot believe this tiny little soul has lived three years in those conditions.
His little arms were just so frail.
When he has a little more weight on him doing some exercise in the water will help to slowly bring up his strength.

Im so glad he seems to have turned a corner. Pig out James ^_^

You are an angel Barb.

Thank you

Pigging out is what he's doing! lol
The first thing he does when lights on is go to his dish of pellets. He doesn't even warm up before he starts chowing down.
He'll eat as many worms as I put in there. I'm trying to get them mixed with the salad so he gets some of that too. I figure as long as he is eating the pellets, he is getting something in besides the worms. He picks a bit at the salad, but not as much as I'd like yet. I'm sure it will change too. :)

Now that he's eating so much, I'll be sure to post another picture in a couple of weeks.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
