I recently got my Beardie back from a friend that was supposed to be watching and taking care of him for me whilst I was studying abroad and to much of my dismay he completely neglected my poor baby. :angry5: He also decided that Spyke (my beardie) didn't need all of the "stuff" he came with so he parted out his viv. I've been dealing with that through the proper channels. :banghead:

I've had him back for a week now and he is still incredibly emaciated. His poor head is all shrunk in and I can see the bones around the base of his tail. I've been talking with a friend of mine whom is a vet tech and she was briefing me on how to slowly re-acclimate him and bring him back to a healthy status. He's been looking good and doing better until today. It recently started to get very cold outside and hits about 68-70 in my house at night. So I'm not sure if he's acting this way because of brumation or if he's just taken a turn for the worse.

When I woke up this morning I noticed that his beard was black. Solid black from the tip of his mouth down into his chest. Normally this means that he is upset about something so I picked him up to see what was going on and discovered that he had pooped and instead of moving away from it, he stayed in it. It was also not one of his normal poops. As of late his poop has been a dark green thickish consistency with the hard white lump. This one though was a light brown almost caramelly- translucent color and it was very thin and oily. I cleaned that up and gave him a bath but through the entire bath his beard stayed solid black and he kept his eyes half shut not really looking at me or anything. Normally during his baths he will drink some of the water but this time he didn't even open flick his tongue. Once finished bathing I offered him some greens which he also refused. He wasn't even slightly interested in them. So them I tried some of the baby food which he is normally ravenous with and can't get enough of. This time he just completely ignored it. Didn't even look at it. All the while beard stick solid black. So I put some water in his dish in his viv and set him by it. When I returned approx. 30 mins later he was in the dish and most of the water was gone but he looked half dead and his beard was still black. Out of concern I picked him up and check to make sure he was still breathing and all. He was extremely cold but still semi-alert and breathing. I tried the food again to no avail and set him back in on his basking log and came to the internet to look for answers as I do not have the funds to go to the vet as I would much like to.

Info:
-Spyke is 8 years old (I've had him since he was a few weeks old. He will be 9 in January). And I'm pretty certain that he is the result of inbreeding. (He has knobs in his tail that act as joints.)
-His diet has consisted of baby food(chicken) and collard greens until his strength returns.
I've noticed that he is having trouble aiming for the loose food and I'm not sure if that is because he's weak or if he's going blind.
-I've been giving him baths every day for about 20 minutes. (He seems to enjoy them)

This is his set up at the moment until I can get my stuff back and/or afford to buy new stuff.

-He is in an old snake terrarium. I believe it's 100 gal. I may be wrong.
-His substrate is tile.
-He has two basking logs that give him different heights to lay on to bask.
-His heat source is a 75 watt heat bulb in a fluker's ceramic clamp light.
-He has no UVA or UVB at the moment as the one I bought online arrived at my house in pieces. So I'm dealing with that too.
-The temps on the warm side have been mid 90s and the cold has been low 80s and drops to about mid 70s-high 60s at night. I do not have his normal ceramic night heater at the moment. Working on getting that as well.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

As I've writing this he seems to be perking up a bit. He slid off his log and climbed back onto it instead of just lying where he fell. He also seems more alert but is still not interested in the greens I left him. His beard is also now more of a grey than black.

The ones at the store in my area are bad ones. I had to special order the one I did. Believe me, I'm definitely working on it. The replacement should be to me in approx 2 days. But it's the holidays so shipping is all crazy.

Any way you'd be able to just use the 'bad' one temporarily? And no other stores in your area huh? That really sucks when you are dependent on mail.

If the bulb isn't here tomorrow I will. (The store is already closed now)
I live in PA in a very rural area. The nearest pet store to me is a farm store that sells mostly farm type things and very few reptilian items. They are great but I hate having to order things and wait on mail.

Will do. I'm not home at the moment, I had to work, but he seemed to be more alert when I left. Basking happily on his log. I think it's going to be an uphill battle getting him back to healthy but he's a spirited fella so I have faith that he'll make it. If I get the chance to I'll take photos of him now. I am so pissed off about this whole situation

Also,
I'm definitely going to get the lamp asap.

Hello,

Poor guy but at least you have him now! I hate to hear of the neglect.
What type of thermometer are you using to measure his temperatures with?
If you have any pictures of him & the setup you can post them here so we can see him.
Since his stools have been off, it sounds like he is very dehydrated & malnourished. I would introduce proteins very slowly right now & focus on greens & vegetation to get him hydrated without stressing his kidneys.
Make a greens slurry several times per day & add calcium for him once daily. Then, monitor his urates to be sure his kidneys are working well. Once his urates are regular & soft then you can slowly introduce insects & more protein. At his age, he will need the majority of greens & vegetation with a small amount of protein for health.

Let us know how he is doing!

Update:

Spyke seems to be doing a little better but mostly it's more of the same.
His beard has gone back to being black and he's still acting lethargic with no interest in any food or water. He perked up a little during his bath today but still didn't consume any. I did get the uvb bulb from the store to use temporarily but quickly discovered that when my "friend" parted out his tank, he took all of the wiring and fuses for the uvb lights. So I have a bulb but no working fixture. I'm going to have to go in tomorrow and get a full fixture.

I've been giving him collard greens, which he seems to enjoy. Are there other greens that would be good to give him? And a slurry is what exactly?
I'm limited by what my local pet store has. As I said before, it's more of a farm store so not much for reptiles. But I've built a good rapport with the store owner so he is willing to special order things for me at cost. My vet tech friend said to use rep-cal and I've used it before so I'll get that again as well.

I'm using a laser spot thermometer to check temps.
This is his current set up. I am working on the uvb light issue.
The hood at the top houses the uvbs and timer for lights.

(He opened his eyes and showed a little interest in taking photos lol)

And incredibly black beard that has been a recent addition.

I wish there was more I could do for him. I feel as if this was my fault and that I betrayed him by leaving him with that person.

Poor guy. Try offering him some green beans or squash (or both) baby food and see if he likes that. The baby food will go into a plastic syringe easily and if he goes for it, it will give him some energy and hydration. Just little bits at a time though. Don't want to overwhelm him.

Hello,

Oh my, he sure is thin, poor thing! I am sorry they didn't do a very good job of taking care of him.
Go very slowly with feeding him. The most important thing right now is fluid therapy, to get his system working better.
Let us know how he is doing.

Update 2:

Can beardies throw up? When I woke up this morning there was that same caramelly translucent oily grossness but only under and around his head/mouth and it was a little frothy this time.

He also pooped shortly after his lights went out for the night. I checked him before I went to bed last night and found a small, soft, white, bit by his tail.

He also absolutely refused a bath today. Normally he'll lay in the water and puff up a bit. But today he absolutely refused to be in it at all.

Other than that, nothing has changed so far. He's still very lethargic and just sort of lays where I put him. His beard is still black.

After reading what you guys have said, I'm thinking this turn may have been caused by overwhelming his system by accident? When I got him back he was eating greens just fine. I didn't have to slurry them. But I just introduced the protein a day before this all started. I'm wondering if I introduced protein too soon?

And other than bathing him, how can I get fluids into him? He is absolutely refusing everything I've offered him so far.

He may have overdone it and thrown up a bit. Small amounts at a time several times per day is better than a lot all at once. If he isn't licking water from his nose, you can try gently pulling back on his beard with your thumb to see if he'll open for a syringe that way. Don't be too forceful though as this may be quite stressful and I'd use it as a last resort if he isn't licking any water from his nose.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
