hey guys, this is gonna be a little long so bear with me please.
i just sort of inherited two beautiful beardies from neighbor. one male one female.....both at least a year old, but probably a little older. he loved them, but had to make an emergency move to a place that did not allow pets and he said he didn;t really have time to care for them anymore. I haven't named them yet, but i'm workin on that (my neighbor wasn't one with anthropomorphic tendencies, and as such, never named them). in any event, they seem to be in great health and he gave me everything he owned for them. decent terrarium, (about 5 feet by 2 feet) food (crickets) calcium powder, lights (one UVB and one regular white heat), heatrock, terrarium dressings (driftwood type climbing thing, fake half hollow log) and such. but there are a couple problems. first, i've always wanted a beardie, but never owned a reptile, heh and second.....the female is pregnant! now, i do have an incubator, and i've had at least some time to read up on them (only got them a couple days ago) and some of the things he did in carting for them are questionable from what i've read.....
first, he used crushed walnut shells for strata, and i've read that we should never use that, due to risk of impaction from the beardies snagging it up while eating. so advice on what to use and in what quantities would be GREATLY appreciated.
second, i could use some serious advice on how to set up cage...keep it clean and keep my new babies happy! i do work quite alot, but my email goes directly to my cell, so any urgent advice can be sent to [email protected] and i would GREATLY appreciate that.
third, i am currently living with my uncle, who smokes cigs in the house and also has 3 dogs. dogs stay out of my room, but i don;t know whether the smoking is a problem for beardies. i know they definately react to smells, and if nothing else, i'm worried that the smell of smoke could cause them undue stress.
fourth, this is the big one......what do i do about the pregnant girl? neighbor gave me an incubator, so thats good (female has had eggs before i think) but i don;t know if i need to separate both the male AND the female from the eggs, once she lays them, or if i need to separate both male and female and gets the eggs to the incubator immediately after she lays them. i also don;t know how long she's been pregnant, or how long beardie gestation is. also, does she need to be able to make a nest for egg laying or not?
fifth, good foods, bad food, how often a day to feed, signs of stress or injury i should look for and so on....never owned or cared for anything aside from small mammals (dogs, rodents, and such) but i've always been really good at animal rescue and caring for the pets i've had. just recently nursed a baby squirrel back to health that a neighborhood cat dropped at my feet as a present.
anyways...thanks for stickin with me through the long post.....i'll check this forum at least once a day and as i said, i can be reached at [email protected], which goes directly to my cell phone, which is unfortunately always on my hip.
sincerely,
Steve V
