I have a rescued female (in my possession for 2yrs.) that has been with an adult male JoJo (1yr. old) for approx 3 weeks total. He has been with a the same female (Fallon) since birth and has not mated with her, all are healthy. Mating displays were witnessed between Rose and JoJo, not the deed though, and lately she's been trying to get out of the tank more than ever! The male has been restless as well. I noticed no heavy bite marks on either of them. Maybe the stress level isn't a factor? As a control i guess, the other female has been running laps in her 50 gal as well. And head bobbing has increased with her along with jumping.
All are on the same diet: greens/fruit/crickets/superworms(not often)/locust(rarely), beardie bites all insects dusted/gut loaded and vegs sprayed every other time with vit sup w/ beta carotene. Except the other day found a cockroach in the house and gave it to Rose, I use no insect sprays, etc. in the house or yard.

on a side note, is it bad practice to have their tanks close enough to see each other (breeding pair 50gal and single female 50 gal)?

Rose is: bloated, I noticed what looked like her trying to dig with her hind legs but no extension of the hind leg to push dirt. A sort of rapid hind legs wiggle and then i noticed her vent open. I When I noticed her vent open and dragging on the substrate (crushed engl. walnut shell) just today and gave her a bath when i saw this and it has gone back in but still looks swollen!. Just before that not eating too heavily (but may be do to increasing her veggies and less crickets), restless, digging in corner of tank (did this b4 intro of male), jumping to get out has increased, i removed the male who seemed uninterested in her for the most part over the past 3wks.
I'm worried about impaction or egg binding or prolapsed anus. She gets baths 1 or 2 every 2 wks because I rarely catch her drinking or bathing on her own. What could it BE?? This will be my first possible breeding pair and i understand no matter how much you read each BD female is different when it comes to egg laying. Any info. would be excellent.

In the mean time i made a lay box just in case it may be egg related and placed it in there. I have felt her belly but Rose may be too plump, muscle in the way, etc. to feel/see for eggs? It seems too early as well. But then again she may just have infertile eggs?

Ok I will go 1st.
At 1 year old your male dragon is starting to become sexually mature.
IT IS PAST TIME TO SEPERATE. For the health of your animals this is what I would suggest.
The behavior you are wtnessing is the tip of the iceburg so to speak.
If you think your girls is gravid get her into her own tank with heat and uvb. dust her bugs with calcium everyday, and let her eat all she wants.
Ditch the walnut shells to.
Good luck
Tom

Ok, just for kicks, i have an extensive wildlife background in the classroom as well as in the field, just to let ya know i'm no amateur when it comes animals. Although this is my first breeding pair, I have done quite a bit of research and an owner for 2 yrs. Please save the watered down answers for someone who is thirsty. It's a bit disrespectful. But thank you for the reply regardless.
The male Jo jo, has been separated. He was with Rose 1 week every other week for 3 weeks for the reason of mating. And YES I do have an incubator. lol
I used eng walnut b/c in the 2 yrs of having her she uses her tongue exclusively (rather than chomping) and seemed to pick up less debris than with the washed playsand, she's a good shot i might add. There is much controversy on this subject. Any ideas?

The other female Fallon, was raised with Jo jo by someone else.

My question was about signs of pregnancy, her vent, and egg binding. Your answer sir, at the risk of sounding like an a**hole, was not helpful. By the way, the stage right before the egg laying, i have read, is the time where they stop eating b/c the clutch size has taken up most of the room in her abdomen, etc.
Need More Info Please

I apologize for my rudeness earlier, but my animals mean the world to me and this was quite stressful.

Great news though, earlier today she laid 3 eggs (trampled/pierced). She laid them haphazardly with no digging. So i VERY CAREFULLY transferred her into a 30 gal bin with moistened topsoil/peatmoss (no chems in it) mounded on one side which i then compacted with my hand in a sterile glove. I have the bin covered 1/2 way with a 100watt basking bulb (digi read 92.5 in the corner i set it) with the higher end being cooler, a human heating pad underneath it (low heat, don't want them over easy) and a water dish.
I also started a hole for her but a 1/2 hr later she laid another egg with no digging. In regards to the 4th egg, the likely hood is low for a 1st clutch egg to be fertile but like the others i will freeze it and then throw it away.
I tried offering a juicy cricket, dusted, to get clacium in her asap, but she ignored it. A sign of more eggs to come? I figured i would leave her in the bin till tomorrow evening just to be safe and then, if no eggs present, move her into a warm bath and gently rub her belly for bit just to be sure there are no eggs left.
I am mating them for a reason, but my main concern is my girl Rose. Her health is most important to me. Please let me know if I have overlooked any details. This is my 1st breeding pair and I don't want to over look ANYTHING. I would enjoy your criticism, as long as it's constructive.

side note: how dangerous is it to candle an egg and not "addle" (slosh) it in the process? I don't think I have the skill for that.

TheWolfmanTom I would like to, as personable as possible, apolligize for my temper. That was uncalled for. And who am I?......The guy that posted the title that should have read "Help! Is she gravid OR impacted" LOL... I'm just another corncerned human that a dragon has taken a liking to.
I apolligize to the moderator as well.

it took my girl cinder a couple days to find her groove so to speak, she had laid a couple eggs in her viv randomly also, these were infertile (small with a yellow spot) i put her in the lay box and she'd dig and then pack it all back in. no laying, then one day she spent about 4 hours digging a hole to china and laid 15 eggs. I would say if she looks and acts like she's gonna lay, she's probably going to. but she'll do it in her own sweet time. lol i think it took her like 5 days of me putting her in the lay box after work. you're leaving her in might help but it's hard to monitor her if you work. and they cover them REALLY well.

if you hold her up by her front legs does she look like a pear? I know it sounds funny, but the eggs will go to the bottom and she will look really wide near her vent/abdomen. you can also gently feel for eggs, but I had a hard time feeling them myself in cinder. i could see the lumps in her side though which she never had before.

hope that helps even a little,

on a side note, glad to see the apology, we all can get a bit cranky when stressed. lol

cheers,

Charles

Our Sweetie has done the same thing; ramdom eggs around the house, in the bath, behind my hubby's chair, in her tank, then the rest in the laybox. I'm glad you're getting your female to the vet anyway. Hopefully she'll be done all the eggs before you leave. Good luck, we're fortunate, out of 3 females only Sweetie lays infertile eggs. We're not set up for breeding yet, it's expensive to feed babies!

Let us know how your girl is faring. Sweetie has had about 8 clutches in the last 2 years of infertile eggs. We have 2 males, but they don't see each other. Sweetie started laying eggs before we got the other four. I'm hoping she'll lay off this year, but you never know.

Good luck!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
