Help gout or MBD.

I have a hard time getting him to eat much plant food so he does eat crickets and super worms a lot. Other then that the only other her gets is bok choy and dandelion. I do not know if any of those is high in protein. The only thing I had actually added before this started was canned crickets and I have since then stopped getting those because I noticed it showed high protein content on the label. Should I be changing anything I am giving him?? Any suggestions on how to get him to eat more plant foods?

Hello Diane,

You can try getting some alfalfa meal to give to him for protein that is purine free which is easier
on his kidneys. I would keep it to 25-30 insects weekly right now, with a focus on hydration/vegetation.
I would cut down or cut out the dubia roaches, they are very high in protein so they would be a
bit harder on the kidneys than other insects. The canned crickets would probably be too much for him.
Does he not like taking food from the syringe/dropper?

Hello Diane,

I probably wouldn't use those, they may be too high in protein, unless it is all vegetable matter. Some contains soy or other fillers. I would think about critical care powdered formula, or you can get baby
food like chicken or turkey mixed with sweet potato or squash baby food to feed to him.
If he likes the flavor of it, you can probably just drip the food onto the end of his little snout & he should lick some of the food off.

I could not find chicken or turkey baby food without gravy but did get a sweet potato one to try. Oh did he love it! I wish I had tried that sooner! I am going to look online for chicken and/or turkey.

Hello,

Oh that is good news he liked the sweet potato one. You can also look for summer squash or winter squash, that is usually well liked, also. It can be hard to find the chicken or turkey without gravy. Maybe the health food store would carry it, just with natural juices.

So update on Leaf, the swelling is not to much better and his other foot in a little swollen too. I have started with the black cherry in hopes that will help too. Other then the swelling he seems fine. He walks around fine, eat good, poops good, etc. Thinking not much more I can do other then what I am doing. Is having it drained an option or even worth it if it will just come back?

So sorry to hear about Leaf. I have been told, I'm not sure that this is true, that the swollen parts may never go down. I was skimming over the posts and I was wondering if anyone suggested serrapeptase? It could help ease any pain and has several benefits.

Hello,

How long now, has he been on the allopurinol for & what is his dosage again?
I think it would be good to try the black cherry extract, too just for helping with overall kidney
health & managing uric acid levels.
Sometimes, the swelling doesn't completely go away. It can take quite awhile for the swelling
to go away completely, many times months, like up to 6 months depending on the uric acid
levels.
How is his protein intake now?
You can post new pictures of him & if you wanted you can email me some new pictures, also.
