Hi! Cages that have mesh don't keep the heat in. Sand is bad and can cause impactation. Please read the care sheet. It has great information and check the food list. They also need calcium and vitamins. Welcome to the forum. It has alot of useful information to help you. Good luck and enjoy your beardie!!

Hey there, Lizzlover! Welcome to the fantastic world of Bearded Dragons! Great job on finding this forum, its the best thing that’s ever happened to me as far as being a Beardie owner! :love5:

Ok. Don't just listen to me on this, check around on the forums and see what you need as far as enclosures, feeders, and other things. But I will give you a quick (ok, not so quick..) run-down on the basics. So get comfy, sit tight, and keep hands and feet inside the car at all times. :p

----> I'm not sure what you mean by "net like cage", but I'm guessing you mean its not solid like glass or plastic, more like a metal/cloth mesh? I would go with an aquarium like tank, one that will keep a proper amount of heat in and all. and to keep your Beardie from climbing the walls and getting too close to the light, they could burn themselves.

---->Go to your local pet store/reptile house and get a heat/basking lamp appropriately sized for your tank (just ask the reptile specialist) and get a UV bulb. I believe Reptisun is the brand I use. I haven't had any issues with it. They NEED both of these. They need over 100 degrees for baby dragons, and they will have terrible health issues if they don't have adequate UV light. When you place your lights, have an elevated basking spot so your beardie can soak up adequate heat and UV, and have it at one end of the tank. Have another end that should be around 70-80 degrees, so that they can go to whichever end they please to be at the temperature they want. (The change in temp from one side to another is called the heat gradient, you can find more info on that in the forum.)

-->DO NOT USE SAND. Especially if you have a baby/juvenile bearded dragon. They could accidentally ingest it and it could cause impaction (A lump of indigestible matter jammed in their intestines. It could cause paralysis, internal bleeding and puncturing, and death if not passed) A lot of people use it for their adults, but its still risky business. Instead, use Newspaper, Paper towels, Ceramic tiles, ReptiCarpet (Found at your local pet store), or any other solid object that they cannot eat, or will not try. Anything like Walnut shells, sand, reptile bark, seashells, gravel, peat moss, or ANYTHING loose like this should never be used. It may look pretty, but you could end up with a very sick, in pain, or dead dragon.

---> Don’t feed it anything from your yard or from any place outside unless you are 1000000% sure it has NEVER seen a chemical in its lifetime. Which is HIGHLY unlikely. Even if you’ve never used it, it could run in from rain, your neighbors yard, stuff like that. You never know what kind of pesticides, weed killer, growth hormones, and yucky stuff like that is in your lawn, and with that, you never know what is in the insects that eat that. So stick with trusted sources, like your pet store, pet supply store, or online (make sure they are trustworthy brands, like Flukers.) Feed them crickets, super worms, hornworms, waxworms(these are known as “beardie candy”. They love them, but they’re very fatty and not too nutritional.) and silkworms. DO NOT FEED THEM ANYTHING BIGGER THAN THE SPACE BETWEEN THEIR EYES. It could cause impaction. Stick with small crickets and worms until your beardie is big enough. Also, beardies of all ages need their greens, just like us humans. Go anywhere that has FRESH greens that don’t look bad, contaminated, or brown and moldy. Turnip greens, mustard greens, Collard greens, Cactus pads, and Cilantro are what I feed my dragon most times. Along with blackberries, apples, plum, apricot, peach, tomato, green pepper, and squash. Don’t feed them any citrus, like orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, etc. I also heard that grapes are bad.. Go to http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtreme.com/Nutrition.html , it is a LIFESAVER. Use that as your feeding bible.

---->Give her baths a few times a week. In your sink, tub, a container, etc, take enough WARM (test with your wrist, not HOT, not COLD..) and fill it enough so it goes up to their armpits/shoulders. Set them in and let them swim around for 10-15 minutes. If she poops, its ok, just clean it out and change the water. Its natural for that to happen. Just don’t let her swim in it. Make sure you supervise her AT ALL TIMES. it only takes a mere second for your girl to drown. Don’t keep a bowl of water in her tank, it could cause respiratory issues. Instead, take your finger, a spray bottle, a plastic syringe (NO NEEDLE), spoon, straw, anything that can drip water onto their nose so they can lap it up when they are outside of their tank.

----> Make sure to take her out and play with her every day, even if its only for 10 minutes. This will get her used to you, and soon enough, she will never want to be set down! They will grab onto and hug your finger until you pry them off! :p They love being handled, and surprisingly, they love cuddling into soft cloths. Take a baby blanket, an old shirt, a hoodie, soft towel, or anything soft cloth you would want to use and wrap her up loosely into a “beardie burrito”. She will fall asleep in no time. She will become attached to you in no time flat. And she will have her new slave (you, silly! :p ) trained in no time! Your new girl will be the best little lizard you can get!

Now… SHOW US SOME PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   :love5: :love5: :love5:

You will need to load the picture on a website called photobucket. The account is free and takes five minutes. You upload the picture, then copy the code for forums (or bulletin boards) and paste it into the dialog box. Then post.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
