Hello all.

I am thinking of getting a bearded dragon. right now we have 2 anoles. the kids love to watch them but are a little disappointed that they cant hold them. the kids ages are 11 and twins that are 8.
i took the kids to a local reptile place and let them look at and hold the BD. the 8yo really liked them.
my 11yo daughter didnt want anything to do with it scared to death of them. lol. i think she will come around.
my wife is about the same way as the daughter. shes just a little freaked out by the looks of them.
me on the other hand love em. very cool pet.

i came across this site when i was doing some research for the bd's. and i have a whole slew of questions to ask, but iam not too sure if i should just ask all my questions in the general area or try and seperate the questions to the proper area on the forum.

so far this is the site that has had the best information on the web. thats why i have decided to join here. and hopefully i will find a nice colorful bd and be able to contribute to this site.

thanks
dawg

Welcome to the site!

When I was looking for one, my wife wasn't into it either. I took her to a shop to look at em and she was able to hold one and that helped her along. You might try something like that. Oh, my wife also thought the little spikes on the edge of their bodies were real, so having her feel one to see that they are not in fact actual spikes might help the cause.

Ive had my bd for 3 days today and i strongly advise to read these forums as deep as you can, then ask the few Q's you might need most of it is here but if not someone from the higher grounds will be in touch

Be careful of the pet shop owner, if hes alike mine he might no very little about bd's, beardeddragon.org :D :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

yeah slu thats what i tried to do. i let the bd climp up my shirt and on my shoulder. he kinda started to go down my back and i was leaning foward so it would fall off. the wife looked at me and said "your going to make me take that off your back huh" i said yep. she kinda juj\st used 2 fingers and lifted it off with the biggest YUK face i have ever seen from her. and she quickly put it in my hands. she started to pet it a little and felt the spikes. i think she will come around after we get it.

Im not real positive with the knowledge of the shop. they mainly deal with reptiles and breed bd's. but some of the stuff they have told me is opposite of here. they keep all of them in the calci-sand. they are real nice people though and give alot of information.

im not sure if im going to buy one from them, a local pet store like petsmart or get it online.

i did call a local vet that services reptiles. a vet fee is 44 and the fecal check is 41. she said if it needed dewormed its 17. not sure if those are resonable prices or not.

thanks for your replies

Hi dawg, welcome! I must say I would be wary of buying a beardie that has been kept on calci-sand (they should re-name it to "death in a bag"). I hear all the time about expert reptile shops that are excellent. The closest one to me told me a shouldn't be feeding my beardie (when he was a baby) anything but mealworms  id!ots

ask any and all questions you want here and if the moderators dont like them here they'll just move them you won't get banned or any thing unless you curse alot and say bad things or make fun of people and frankly you just don't seem the type to do that. lol ask away!

man i need to stop going to the pet stores and looking at the bd's
went to petland and they had some babies that were only like maybe 6 in long. at most.
very very cute.

im kinda bent on whether i should get a baby that size or one thats bigger.

as far as which one to get being a first time bd owner should i skip the baby and get one thats a bit older. im also new to reptiles besides the anole's i have and thats only been like 2 months.

im trying to find some of the answers to my ? here in the forums before i ask.

thanks

Depends how you feel?

Im a first time owner and was just like you older or younger?

I looked around and found 6, 11 week old red phased bd's staring at me, hmm cost was £65 compared to pff £120 upwards for adult.

although all six were the same hatchlings one was more than oviously bigger than the rest 8" nose to tail where as the others where 6" tops!

So a nice size for me with my sausage fingers to handle and ill get the benefit of bonding and seeing him grow :D

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
