My family just got our first B D on recommendation from the vet. We had to take my dog in for an emergency and the vet had a B D that is approx 8 years old. Both of my children fell in love with Geri at the vet. We had to spend quite abit of time at the vet and she convinced us (it didn't take much) that a BD would be a great new addition to our household. So we found Sami. I am still trying to find a way to measure Sami and trying to figure an age on it (sorry don't know sex yet). Sami does not like to be held and runs from me or the kids when trying to pick him up. So far the only person that is able to pick him up is the neighbor who does not get skiddish around reptiles as I do. Not because I don't like them, more because they are quick and sometimes unpredicatable. My kids are starting to get their feelings hurt because Sami won't let them pick him up. Sami also doesn't seem to be eating as well as he should according to the discussions. I think he only eats 5-6 crickets a day and will eat some greens. We have tried some babyfood as well. He is shedding so I hope that this accounts for some of the problems. The temp in the basking area is 110 and on the cool side is 85. We are waiting to get the MVB but for now we are using the bulbs that came with the set up. We have the basking bulb, the UVB bulb and a night bulb, just to keep the temps up a little. Anyways, We have had Sami for a week and have truely fallen for him, we just hope we can hold him or at least hand feed him soon.

Just a post to say Welcome :D ..... I don't have enough experience to help but I think you've come to the right place. Reading the post here (new and old) have helped me a lot.

She just twisted your arms, didn't she?!? :D

It does take a little time for them to settle in and become used to new people when they are little. Before you know it you'll be grabbing up scaleys with ease. I almost picked up a snake my 2 year old brought into the house the other day.

It is likely relocation stress that is causing his appetite to drop a little right now. Many beardies experience this while they are settling into their new homes. Tyson went 2 weeks with a minimal appetite and 3 weeks without pooping...I was never so happy to see a pile of stinky poop in my life! :) Keep offering him food, 2-3 times per day, as much as he will eat in a 10-15 minute period of time. Have a nice salad in his enclosure that he can snack on if he wants to. I even offer it to hatchlings. Shedding can also make them a little crabby. It can pull and itch...so it's no wonder they don't have a very sunny disposition some days.

Your temperatures sound pretty good. What are you measuring them with? You really don't need a night bulb unless the room temperature drops below 60 degrees F at night. The light, even though it's dim, can disturb their sleep. I am planning to get ceramic heat emitting lights for the winter.

Anyways, We have had Sami for a week and have truely fallen for him, we just hope we can hold him or at least hand feed him soon.

It sure is easy to fall in love with the little buggers. Welcome to the world of being a beardie slave.

You could try handling Sami at night when he's sleepy, wrap him up in a small blanket with his head poking out the top and then place him (in the blanket) on your chest, even inside your shirt or jumper. A lot of beardies seem to like this and it helps them to associate your scent with safety and warmth. They will often fall asleep on you, then you can put them back in their enclosure still wrapped in the blanket, and they will usually stay asleep wrapped in the blanket for the whole night.

 Welcome to BD.org! :D
It just sounds to me as your new beardie has a case of relocation stress.
Give him a week or two to settle in. Sami needs time to get use to his new atmosphere. :)
Beardies tend to eat less if at all during relocation stress.
Not to be to worried he will be eating you out of money in no time.

Oh, by the way we love pic's around here. Hint...hint!

Thank you for all the replies and advise. Sami did let us hold him/her a little last night, but then panicked again. Today we are just trying to let him be and see how we do tomorrow. I'm not going to use the night light tonight and we will see if that helps him sleep a little better. Thank you again and I will get pics as soon as we are able to get a decent one, right now he just hides.

Hello there-
Just thought I'd let you know you are not alone. I got my baby three weeks ago and he still is very skittish and doesn't like to be held. He gives me dirty looks and it's disheartening but from day one till now there is some gradual improvement and I remain hopefull that he'll warm up more and more. I've been reading, and reading, and reading from this site and learned a lot (and still learning).

I believe I heard that they should have no light at all at night....maybe use the search function to check that out.

From one New owner to another....Keep the faith :D :banghead:

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
