i was talking with a friend about making my own rock, and he brought up a few suggestions, like using modeling clay, the kind that you bake and it hardens? and also trying the expando-foam in a can to make the whole rock and then carving it to preference, he think it is easier to cut and shape than styro foam.

have any of you tried this? or what do you think?

[*edit] another idea: for myself, i cant cut any tiles cause i don't have the right tools, but! i can cut cardboard or styro foam, so why cant i make grout covered puzzle pieces to fit my viv? it works in my head. if i sand the sides smooth enough to fit together. but please tell me if those of you who are more practiced in this think its a bad idea.

We used the expanding foam on the base we had made out of polystrene when you cut it it starts to shrink, and curl around the cut parts. If you are not trying for an ezact shape I would think it would be ok, but we found the ridge we were trying for all but shrank away after we cut the foam. We used Great stuff. Love the look though and hint..after you spray it where you want it continues to expand as it cures. So don't over use it thinking it is not large enough mine more than doubled as it cured. Also we had to use a very fine and paper to rough up the "skin" on the great stuff to get the grout to stick, otherwise it kept flaking off.
