my new baby has been doing great but now he has a large hunk of poop hanging out that will not release. Is this the same as impaction noted in previous posts? Will nature run its course or is intervention called for? He has been eating live baby crickets and canned baby crickets but shows no interest in meal worms or vegetables. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

This is not a normal occurrence. Can you post a picture of this for us, so we can be sure that it is not a prolapse instead?
Try soaking your baby in warm water. However, do NOT pull on anything, if it feels firmly attached, etc you could damage skin or overlying areas surrounding the problem.
No, this is not impaction, or shouldn't be.
Can you tell us more about your tank setup? Are you using a loose substrate or a solid one?

I am using a sand substrate. I have a good photo but it isn't showing in the preview, so not sure if it will show in the post or not. Thanks.

I admit I am no expert, but that doesnt look good at all and if it did not come off with soaking in warm water it could be a piece of his intistine tht has come out. You might want to consult a vet.

Yikes !! Looks like a rectal prolapse ! Needs to get to a vet...in the mean time, soak it in warm sugar-water. This may shrink it so that it will retract and go back in. Hope it works !

Yes, a prolapse occurs when the dragon is straining to go....could be caused by the cricket-only diet, especially if any were too large or from the " dried" ones in a can. Hopefully you can get it back in. If he recovers, soak the baby at least once a week and spray daily [ very gently ] with a spray bottle on the head to get it to drink. Keep putting leafy turnip, mustard dandelion greens, these will keep the bowels working better and aid in passing stools. If the diet is not corrected, it can easily happen again [ prolapse ]. Not picking on or bashing you by any means, this can happen to anyone, but those are some tips to help prevent.

A little while ago my young beardie was straining to poop. I noticed a bit of a pink bulge sticking out for a few seconds afterwards. Is this the start of this condition? What can I do to prevent it from getting worse? Jabberwock mostly eats crickets and some mealworms. He's good about eating his greens. I've got a sample cup of phoenix worms on the way - will mixing those with his diet help?

He won't survive if it doesn't go back in, but hopefully soaking it in sugar-water will shrink it. Your little guy should not be on sand right now, it will irritate the exposed organ. Change to paper towels.I have manually popped a few in in 16 years of beardie ownership, but it's difficult and delicate. I hope the soaking does the trick....otherwise a vet will be needed.

So far he is loving the warm sugar bath. He even drank a little of it. Thanks for the advice about the paper towels. Can any vet attend to this sort of thing or is a specialist needed?

A reptile vet if you can find one. I don't know if a regular vet would know what to do other than try to pop it back in....but they could at least administer antibiotics if necessary.

Hello,

Just a quick suggestion, the sugar bath needs to be cool, to help reduce the swelling to help the tissue draw back in. Keep vaseline or KY jelly on the area, along with paper towels moistened to help with this problem. You did remove the sand, correct?
Also, try not to lay him on his back as that could cause the lungs to collapse. They don't have a diaphram to help them breathe while on their backs.
You will need a vet as soon as possible, to help him out.
We should probably review your tank setup, as well when you get a chance.
