Getting New Beardie, in for a challenge

Picking up this girl later this afternoon. She is 3 yrs old, 12 inches long, and I honestly don't think I wanna know what she weighs yet. Her current owners were told that she is the "small" kind of bearded dragon :roll:

Quick update: just got home with her and am currently setting up a temp enclosure for her. After talking to the previous owners and finding out more information about how she'd been cared for over the past 2 1/2 yrs, I'm actually really surprised that she isn't in even worse condition. She's TINY. The CL ad said she was 12", which is still extremely undersized, but she isn't even that, she's maybe 10" :shock: . I was relieved to see that she didn't appear nearly as emaciated in person as she did in the pictures. She definitely needs to do some filling out, but she isn't skin and bones like I had feared. She was being housed in a 20g tank w/a basking lamp and while they did seem to have some kind of UVB tube bulb, it was placed behind the bottom of the tank at the back....still trying to figure out the reasoning for that. As far as diet, they said she got some crickets every few weeks and a bowl of romaine, carrots, and some other random fruit or veggie. I asked if she was pretty good about eating that and they said they really didn't know since by the time the would go to change out the food it had dried out and they couldn't tell what had been eaten. No calcium or vitamin/mineral supplements were used. Oops, meant to just give a quick update lol. I need to finish setting up her enclosure and take some pics. More to come later.

YAY Paprika has a new home and a new name!

I am so happy for her and that she will be cared in a much better way...

I swear, I don't know how people can stand themselves letting the poor lizard live like that. I guess there are all kinds and I can't fully understand what I don't know, but am glad I don't know. If I couldn't do it, I'd find a new home for my guys. A good home.

I bet she will blossom with the correct care. Obviously she won't be big, but I bet you'll get her healthy!

I saw that UVB light sitting on the bottom behind the glass in the one pic you posted and thought "WTF??"... :roll: It never ceases to amaze me how many people just refuse to do some simple research on the animal they are keeping to get the conditions right.

Yep sdunfee77, she was the one on CL from Southlake. Don't feel bad about not being able to take her, you definitely have your hands full with 8. But yeah, the minute I read the ad I just knew she needed me. I've gotten pretty good at resisting the temptation to rescue everything but this situation was just...different.

Yeahhh, the whole UVB light on the floor *behind* the aquarium glass was a first for me and I've seen some pretty odd setups. Their excuse was that she was really their son's beardie that he apparently got his senior year of college and that he did all the research needed. Somehow I really doubt that claim regarding him doing a ton of research. Regardless, he left for college not very long after getting her so the parents are supposed to have been providing the care for I believe about a year and a half. They made it very clear that they don't like lizards so I think they really just didn't care about whether it was getting what it needed. They never once held or even touched it.

But on a happier note, I'm pretty sure Paprika has already flashed me a "beardie smile". I have high hopes for her getting as healthy as possible and turning into a sweetie once she is actually interacted with and paid attention to.

Within seconds of moving Paprika into her temp enclosure she devoured the reptiworms and waxworms I had put in there. Ate a little of the greens/veggie mix I'd put in there two. Decided to offer some lobster roaches from my colony to see how she reacted to those and she got sooo excited and chased down every single one. I think she already knows that she is going to like it here .
