Exo-Terra Repti Glo 10.0 UVB Problems? Help!

Okay, please I need help. I've heard so much about lighting. But before I got Nim I bought all his items. The UVB I bought is in the description. I heard that the only good light is ReptiSun and others can cause problems. Is this true? Am I hurting Nim with the light? He has been eating fine, shedding fine and perfectly active and responsive. But just a while ago I looked at him and it looks like one eye is half closed. Like the top eyelid is being weighed down. Please somebody help! My heart is racing, I'm sweating, shaking and feel sick. Great, now tears are forming in my eyes. I'm having a panic attack. I love little Nim and don't want him to be sick. So please, someone respond ASAP! I'm going to clean his cage now.

I used this bulb a few years ago and did have problems with it. My beardies constantly stayed in their hides and hid from it. It has been known to cause problems with some beardies. I think it emmits too much UVC light which can be bad on their eyes.

For now you can switch the UVB off, he'll be ok for a few days without it. Instead you should order either a Repti-Sun 10.0 or a Arcaida D3 12% UVB (both these bulbs are tube bulbs and will fit in the fixture you have). Make sure to order the correct length. Pet stores often dont stock these bulbs and you may need to order online.

Dont worry about it he'll be fine. You should find that with the UVB switched off his eye will improve and he should not have this problem with the Repti-Sun or Arcaida bulb.

Are you using a clear/white spot bulb for basking???

This is the only bulb stocked throughout Sheffield (well, the parts of sheffield that I can get to as I don't drive, I bus it!) so this is the bulb I use in all my reptiles. I've never had a problem, but like you when I 1st read about it, I paniced, then I read some more, and realised there wasn't anything I could do about it seen as it was the only bulb I could ever find. In my reading it turns out the panic is about a bad batch. The bad batch did cause eye problems, however, this was mostly due to the bad batch in combination with other incorrect husbandry. If you have a bright white basking light with this bulb, as far as I understand it, you should be fine. That's what I have, and I've had no problems.

I did the exact same when I found out about this bulb, and it doesn't help that they close one eye sometimes either! Then you find yourself waving things in their face to see if they can still see lol.

Thank you for responding so fast! The basking light I'm using is the Exo-Terra daytime heat lamp 100 watt. I switched off the UVB. I just remembered that we need paper towels before I clean his cage. We are currently out. Will get some tomorrow. I will get the ReptiSun before I get the roaches since they cost about the same. He needs the light more than the bugs. The funny thing is, I thought I had the ReptiSun this whole time :roll: They sound the same. Thank you, I can now breath. I still feel a little sick but the panic attack is over. I think how much I worry about him shows the immense love I have for my critter. I just want him to have no medical problems because my previous reptiles had some problem. Just for info I am also in the UK and have yet to find any of these bulbs in a pet store. I order mine online and use the Arcaida D3 12%.

Thanks for the link. But I live in the USA and checked PetSmart's online store and they have them. I ordered the first UVB from online. I think why I didn't get the ReptiSun was because the other one was cheaper. At least I kept all the packaging and receipts from the online order and the store order. PetSmart also only sells the ReptiSun online so definitely be ordering it once payday comes. Which is tomorrow. Just for curiosity, how long can he be without UVB? Thanks.

I'm not sure what age he is, (never asked the pet store.) But he is eight inches long, from tip of nose to tip of tail.

I think Pets at Home is the UK version of Petsmart, or PetCo :!: I've been boycotting there since birth, so I wouldn't even know if they had any in the one near me!

Yeah, I'll say. I love Nim so much that when we ran out of crickets and I saw that he was hungry I freaked out and got mad and teary eyed. This is the first animal I've loved to this extent. Granted, I love all my pets but Nim I would kill myself for, it seems. Or he'll give a heart attack. I'm still a little uptight but it'll pass, my panic attacks always do.

I doubt whether reptiglo would emit UV-C anyway, it's ridiculously ionising so causes cancer with very little exposure (in comparison to UV-A and B) in humans at least! If we didn't have the Ozone layer lots of UV-C from the sun would get in and we'd all die of cancer :?

You can choose royal mail or courier. If you choose courier its Inter-Link. It always arrives really quick, within a day or two. I've never had a problem.

Cool! Royal mail in Sheffield like to steal/open/break my mail. The best one was when my parcel turned up in pieces in a royal mail carrier bag with a generic apology letter and a claim form for the damage.

What are arcadia tubes like? I wanted Repti-sun as I'd heard really good things and that they are really effective in treating MBD (I'm hoping to get another rescue, she has MBD). Do you think arcadia would possibly have the same effect?

I'm feeling better now. I just read on a old post that a beardie can go a week or a little longer without UVB. I checked on Nim and his eye isn't slightly closed I'm so happy that I caught it now. Going to order the ReptiSun tomorrow and make it priority mail. And I also read that if you take your dragon outside for some sun that will work also. So that will be what I'll do. But I live in Maine and heard that you don't get as much sun as you would in California. I still can't shake my slight panic. It's this strange sick feeling that happens in the lower back. I can't explain it very well. So, my mom is out now but when she comes back I'll tell her that we need to buy a ReptiSun ASAP it is more needed then the roaches.

New question, the ReptiSun that will fit my fixture is an 18 inch 5.0. Is that bad? The other ones say 10.0 but are too long for my fixture. And now I just remembered why I got the Repti-Glo because the size that fit my fixture didn't say it was 5.0 or 10.0.
