Elvis has cancer..

So, to make a long story short, I took Elvis to the vet to get a cyst popped but turns out that cyst is actualy a common mouth cancer tumor for beardies, but because of his mbd they dont recomended that I have it removed because he probaly wont wake up from it. She assured me that he wasnt suffering but when he starts eating I'll have to make the call. I was just wondering if anyone out there has had a beardie with mouth cancer so I know what to expect. Its going to be hard to make the call but I figure when he stops eating then its time and even though I wont want to I'll have to let go, so he wont suffer. This just makes things even harder because he has already pulled thru from his mbd and I sure wasnt expecting cancer. I guess I'll have to make the rest of his time left a good one. The vet said she cant tell me exactly how long left he has, but I will be able to tell when its time.

Thanks. I hope he stays too. He's had it for about a month, and I truly thought it was a cyst thats why I didnt rush it to take him to the vet. But so far, in this month, he's been eating more considering he wouldnt eat at all because of his mbd. I just have no idea what to expect and how big it will get, as soon as she said "cancer" I broke down and I know now that I should of asked more questions. Its just weird, overnight a tumor appeared. I have a hard time holding him because I cry just from thinking about him right now, never mind holding him, and he's fine right now. And when he goes into brumation I'll have no clue if he's not eating because he's in pain or if its brumation. But thanks for the wishes.

If they can't operate, can they at least give him prednisone or something to shrink it?

She never said anything about that, I'd have to call her and ask. She basically said theres nothing I can do. Is Prednisone something the vet will have to give me or can I get it some place else?

Today Elvis has already eaten half his salad and some crickets so he's still doing pretty good. The tumor keeps bleeding a little bit after he eats but it hasnt seemed to bother him yet. Hopefully it will be fine, the vet seems to think that it could be a slow-growing tumor. Hopefully little Elvis will hang in there.

Prednisone (or a similar drug) is something you would have to get from the vet. I don't know if it works in beardies, but when my dog had cancer, prednisone bought her an extra good year.

Oh I am so sorry Kaitlyn!!
Try to stay postive (he will sense your strength :wink: ) Who knows,it might be very slow growing and he will live another 8-10 years...a full happy life (((hugs)))

Like Sandi said Prednizone is a prescription drug,it is another name for steroids.

At my house, (I'm with my grandmother in Vermont right now) I have a steriod from when he hurt his spine. I forget what its called, but if its not experied or anything then can he have it. I'm going home tomorow and will post its name.

If you decide to give him steroids to slow the growth I would think it would be a small dose over a long period of time. I really think you should consult with the vet about this.
