Eating Tail

Hello,

I was going to suggest checking for retained shed on the tail tip, that happens quite often.
Usually they will only bite or chew at their tail if it is being constricted with retained shed or
a possible calcium issue.
The neosporin can help the tail tip or some raw unpasteurized honey to help moisturize the
scales, too.
That's great you ordered a new light, that will be very helpful for her.

Let us know how she is doing.

Hello everyone! Thank you so much for the responses and the help. I have still caught him chewing on his tail and I have been applying Neosporin regularly. Now he is chewing on a higher part of his tail because he is discouraged by the taste of the Neosporin. His tail seems to be getting worse, is this a bad sign?

Oh that's too bad, this is not an easy thing to get them to stop. Keep applying the betadine but put the Neospoorin on twice a day at least , all over the tail to hopefully keep him from biting anywhere. You might try wrapping it with gauze but you'd have to be careful that he doesn't accidentally ingest it. Or you could try using a pencil to act as a splint wrapped with gauze so the tail stays straight behind him and he can't reach it. If nothing else works see if you can get a vet to check it out.

The actual problem is that he's chewing it, if that can stop the tail can most likely heal but just like with any wound it can get infected at some point. Just like with a human where a nasty cut, dogbite or cat scratch may cause us to develop infection or it may not. Do you have a vet you can take him to ?

Hello,

I would consider taking him to a vet since he continues to bite at his tail, which is eventually
going to ruin his entire tail if it gets infected especially.
Are you giving him plenty of calcium & good quality loaded insects?

The Neosporin has really helped, I have not caught him chewing his tail since. Should I still take him? I feed him crickets 3 times a day covered in calcium.

That's what I was hoping, that he'd be put off by the nasty taste . Hopefully this will stop the biting so just see how it goes.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
