Dubia Qs

Hey everyone,

I've been considering getting a dubia colony for a while now but I know how long it takes for the colony to really set up to start feeding them to my beardie. Right now I've been feeding him 1/2 crickets and I buy them in bulk from a good local breeder but I dislike the fact that they smell and chirp a lot and overall everyone here knows dubias are WAY BETTER than crickets.

The thing is, is it worth buying dubias in bulk or should I stick to buying crickets until I'm really set with my dubia colony? Also I live in Puerto Rico and its hard to find people selling them here and I would need to buy online but its really hard to find places that ship to PR.

I'm really mindset on having a dubia colony for my beardie so if anyone is willing to ship to PR or knows a place that does, let me know :D (PR doesn't count as international shipping). THANKS!

You're right, dubia are much better than crickets! They just take a little bit of patience to get them started.

I would think it would be tough getting someone to ship to Puerto Rico, mainly because they would have to be flown in (same reason every place I have seen only ships to the "lower 48"). I also don't know off the top of my head as to whether they are legal or not there. If you can buy local, that is probably the easiest route, plus less chance of die-offs which is probably what roach sellers fear the most. They are less likely to chance shipping something if their is an increased chance of die-offs. Dead roaches, even if it is no fault of their own, means lower chances of positive feedback and a good reputation, which is everything in the roach market.

Can anyone local ship to you? I bet that is your best shot! :D

Theres a local breeder that sells them. I guess thats the way to go :)

Definitely a good way to go! I have a decent relationship with someone local, and I know I can contact her pretty much any day and she can help me out. It may take a bit of time to tweak your colony, but once it gets going you'll be a little intimidated by how quickly they go through table scraps.

Haha yeah I just gave a call to my local breeder he's willing to sell them to me in bulk so I don't have to worry about buying off of him every couple of days (and considering my beardie is a little pig :) ). As soon as I get my colony going I wont have this problem no more so thats all good. :D

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
