Dres and Nezzie have worms, and lots of them

The kids went and got their fecals today and the results were less than impressive. Between the two of them we have *drum roll please*

Trichomonas, Hexamita, Balantidium, Giarda, and Isospora

UG!

They have been prescribed Panacur (100mg/ml) Ponazuril (150mg/ml), Metronidazole (100mg/ml), and Doxycycline (10mg/ml). The treatment regimen is complicated too. I think I need to get them their own calendar to keep track of it all! I think the antibiotic was prescribed because of the sheer volume of parasites. Nezzie has also had some blood in her stool so I'm hoping that they help with that too.

I know that much medication will upset their tummies. Thankfully it's only once a day and it will be in the evening. I have some Acidophiliz but I'm not sure how much to give each and when it should be given: either in the AM or in the evening before or after the meds.

My other concern is that some of the meds go for a couple weeks and I know Dresden will be growing and gaining weight. Will I need to adjust the doses as he gains weight?

Oh my goodness, Maggie!
I'm very sorry to hear that! That sounds like a lot of hard work...maybe some of those can just be injected into their food?
Let them eat them right up? I am glad that both of them are still in basically good health and are pretty good eaters, particularly
a certain little wizard! *hugs*

I really don't even think the vet did a full worm fecal when I had Norris done. I think he was really just looking for pin worms.

Thanks Mirthy! The vet was impressed that Dres has managed to put weight on with the amount of parasites in his system. I guess if you have them long enough you adjust. Four syringes each plus the Acidophiliz. Goodness! Thankfully not all are every day. I hope this helps Nezzie with her pooping problems too. It always looks so painful for her.

Did you only ask your vet about pinworms? I'm used to companion animal parasites. I haven't heard of most of these. Guess who is buying a hand held steam cleaner tomorrow?

Oh Yikes! Maggie, I am so sorry to hear this...UHG, is right...and calendars..yes! You will want them...and check them off each day as they get them as well :/

Don't give the acidopholiz less than 6 hours before or after meds, it will counteract the meds

Under 100 grams then just about 1/4 dropper full, maybe a tad more. Over 100 grams then .5 mls per day broken up twice per day would be good. .5mls just about equals 1/2 dropper full.

Are you using the reptile acidopholiz? Just curious, any kind is good. OH, and if you can get some Bee Pollen it will help with their appetite and also has some wonderful other benefits as well, I gave it with the acidopholiz, or you can sprinkle it on the food once per day, just a pinch everyday while on the meds.

I still give Razz BeePollen a couple times per week dusted on his salad.
Here is a link to where I get it, seems to be the best price; http://www.vitaminworld.com/pages/categories.asp?cid=3&searchterm=bee pollen&rdcnt=1 it is the granuals for about $10 *if* you can :)

I know you will keep us posted on how they are doing, maybe they will continue to gain and eat right while on them, but of course don't worry if their appetite slips.

The hand steamer is one of my favorite purchases for the viv without a doubt...the only way to go as far as I believe :)

Hey Maggie, I just asked about parasites and they took away the poo. I got a call back saying no eggs no worms and was so excited that I basically just said thanks bye! *LOL*
But when I talked to them about it on the phone they quoted me $39 for a fecal and when I came in to drop off the sample they only charged me $17.50? I heard them say the other name for pin worms (that I can't remember) Norris takes the bee pollen really well. We've tried it as appetite stimulate. Do you have Sunflower Markets in Seattle? Because they carry it fresh in a refrigerated tube for about $3.00 and larger containers and so forth. It takes pretty good, IMO. Sort of like spicy flour. It's marketed for people so I tried some before we offered it to him. Great that you caught it when you did, Maggie...while Dres was still going to town. I can't imagine him growing any faster than he already is! *hugs* Poor Nezzie, hopefully this makes things a little easier on her.

Ahh this sucks..
I sincerely hope everything goes fine.

This means that if Dres didn't have worms he would be far past Thor's sizes.

Keep us posted on everything

Oh My!!! Maggie thats crazy.

Out of curiosity, how many doses of the panacur are they each getting? Iv never had to give more than 2 doses and it has always worked that way! Then again... iv never dealt with these particular parasites (other than the isospora).

Did the vet say the level of the isospora?

Giarda and Hexamita are related in someway from what I remember - that could be causing the blood in Nezzies poop.

I know nothing about Trichomonas.... I googled it just now and it told me it was a parasite commonly thought of as an STI! LOL! I highly doubt that is correct in this case! Although it would explain the antibiotic!!

Usually I would say give meds in the morning and then give the acidophiliz when you get home from work - about a half hour before their biggest meal of the day. If that doesnt suit you, give acidophiliz in the morning, food to eat during the day and then meds in the evening when you get home. That should work the same - just dont expect them to eat a lot over the next few weeks :(

The acidophiliz says to give 3 drops - based on what I have read on this site (there is an article on dealing with coccidia and other parasites which is a good read), I give a full dropperful. As it is full of nothing but good things, you cant overdose on it.

Keep them both well hydrated - plenty of baths and give water orally if you can - hydration is SUPER important too!

Good luck!

Keep us all posted!

Appetites are definitely down. Dresden has only had three 1/2" nymphs so far today. Nezzie only ate 1/2 of a superworm yesterday. I'm giving the Acidopholiz in the morning. Should I give it before breakfast or after? Nezzie did have her biggest poop yet though! Gross, but considering how difficult it had been for her to go I'm happy she's finally getting it out!

Probiotics I should be at least 2 hours after the antibiotics. Drache613 and diamc are very good with this sort of topic.

I was told minimum of 4 hours but best to leave 6 hours if possible :)

it doesn't matter Michael- it depends on when ur giving the meds. I do meds morning and probiotics in afternoon. When I was working, I did it the other way around. Either works :D

Is it with a 2 hour difference? :?

I was told 4-6 hour difference.

Basically, Tracie told me to do meds in the morning and acidophiliz early evening or vice versa.
That roughly translates to one before work and one after work :D if you work roughly 9-5 :s

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
