Hi, im worried about my beardie, I got her in about January as a baby and for the first few months she was very active and exciteable, she would always run up to the glass and peer out and if i put crickets in her vivarium she would go nuts and chase them around everywhere. However as time went on she started to look misserable and from about the age of 5-6 months till now she has lost her appetite and barely bothers to get up, she just lies in the corner all day sulking.

Sometimes she starts going nuts and trying to run up the vivarium walls as if she wants out, so i let her run around the room and she runs up the wall and headbutts it slightly. Most of the time though she is very lethargic. It got to the point where she wouldnt chase the crickets or locusts and I started having to hold them up to her face, now she wont even eat crickets and will only eat 1-2 locusts every 2-3 days, and even then I have to hold it in front of her face for about 30 seconds before she decides to take it. She still eats her greens a little bit but not much. She doesnt look skinny but she is small for her age (about 35cm long from nose to end of tail) which i think its small for a 10 month old beardie?

Anyway a little about my setup. Its a 3ft wooden vivarium, during the day the hot end is heated up to about 33c with a basking lamp, the cold end reaches about 26c. The basking lamp + the uvb light are on for 12-13 hours a day, when they switch off the matt stat turns on a ceramic heater for the night time which keeps it at a constant 27c. I give her a bath twice a week and mist her everyday. I also supplement her greens and the odd locust she eats with calcium powder everyday, and multivitamin powder twice a week.

I have taken her to the vet and the vet thought she looked fine but had some pinworm which he gave her some medicine for. I am using beech wood chips which i will probably get told off for, but the breeder I got her from says that he has been keeping beardies for years and has never had a beardie die from impaction from wood chips but has from sand. Anyway I tried using repticarpet for a couple of months as i was told this was healthier as it didnt encourage bacteria to spread like wood chips, but this made no difference to my beardie.

I really dont know what else I can do, i want my beardie to be happy but she just sits in the corner sulking the whole day :(

any advice appreciated, thanks

I really dont know

what uvb are you using? and how old is it?
also 33c is a little low for basking temp 39-40c would be better (100-105f)

could you post a picture of her and the viv? it would help us

the UVB is a Exo Terra Repti Glo 10.0 one, apprently they last up to a year, but i changed mine after 9 months to be sure, so now this bulb is 1 month old.

^this is the left side which is the hot side, theres the basking lamp and the ceramic heater behind it.

^ this is the cold side on the right

thanks

Reptiglo does not have a good uvb spectrum. It's really criminal that they can get away with selling this stuff.

You need to get a reptisun 10 tube to get the proper light. They have them at petmountain.com
I had to change my light from a reptiglo too :|
Good luck

Hello,

Is your baby losing weight right now, since she is not eating much? What insects do you feed her?
Unfortunately, the Reptiglo 10 is not a very good light & hasn't been for quite awhile now. I am not sure why they haven't fixed it but we are still seeing issues with using this light from just general lethargic behavior to eye problems.
Try switching to the Reptisun 10 tube bulb first. The tube bulb, is it mounted on the back of the tank, right? It may be too glaring in that position too. Try mounting it directly over head so she doesn't have to stare into the light also, which over time can damage the eyes.

you could also try moving some stuff around so that the highest point is right under the basking spot, just looking at the pics your beardie is basking just off to the side of the basking spot by the looks of it.

My beardie went through the same thing. "Puberty" I reckon! Well mine was a little younger. About 7 months. He didn't eat and became super lazy. I bought some acidopohills off "bug-de-lite" and that got him eating after 4 months of struggeling and force feeding. It's a digestive tract conditioner. Then I replaced his Reptiglo with a reptisun. At one stage I was certain that he had sustained eye damage from the Reptiglo as he wasn't following the cricket movement like he used to. The petshop told me you need to have another globe below that one, a weaker one so they look at that one instead of the bright one. He just showed no interest in any food at all.. also try different greens and all kinds of (recommended) fruit and pellets. Move it when u feed it to him. Mine likes it when his greens dance. He is bound to start eating again soon :)

Best of luck

wow i never expected it to be the bulb, the guy in the reptile shop swears by the exo terra repti glo and says other ones like zoo med are rubbish etc.
i just called up the reptile shop and they were surprised and said that they exo terra ones come reccomended to them by the top breeders or something, he hadnt heard of reptisun!

are reptisun made by exo terra too? He mentioned that he has arcadia ones that are 12% uvb, are they any good?

Also if I fix it higher up near the top of the vivarium wont it be too far away for the rays to be effective? i thought they were only effective up to a distance of like 10" or something?

its worrying me what u say about the eye damage, because its true now that i can only get her to eat by waving a giant locust in front of her eyes and she wont notice it for like 30 seconds at least, then she sometimes sees it, her eyes widen and then she grabs it.

so none of you guys drilled in to me for using beech wood chips i thought i would get told off lol, you consider it to be safe enough?

Any loose substarte is not a good idea in my opinion I have heard of many impaction cases because of wood chips, they also cause irreversible damage to the digestive tract when they do get stuck usually causing a declined quality of life.

I'd change it personally. Tile is cheap and brown paper is even cheaper. Why take a chance with your little guys life or health?

is it possible my beardie's behaviour is because she has a wood chip stuck inside her? perhaps months ago she did swallow one and its become lodged?

no i cant really but dont wanna squeeze too much

ive just ordered the reptisun 10 24" bulb then so hopefully that helps, you think i should put the bulb higher though to avoid damaging her eyes? wont this be too far from her to be effective?

Hello,

If you mount the light at a 6-10 inch distance, that will be fine, as long as it is mounted directly beside the basking light to protect her eyes.
How is she doing today?
How have her stools been? Has she exhibited any signs of having difficulty going to the bathroom?

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
