Yeah, that surprises me that a breeder would say crickets are better. He might use crickets also because you never know what the customer will end up using and beardies can get spoiled easily. When I first started feeding dubias to my little lizard, he stuck his nose up at crickets for a long time.
As far as I know it's ok to feed them to a baby, just use the same caution as you would with any feeder. Don't feed him anything much bigger than the space between his eyes. As with anything, this is all subject to opinion so do some research and ask around and ultimately just do what you're most comfortable with.
