Hi all,

I have the Exo Terra Light Unit Controller 2x40W PT2239

got this a while ago, it takes two bulbs and have been using it with the exo terra repti glo 2.0 and the reptiglo 10.0 as suggested by exo terra. since realising thanks to the knowledgeable people on here that the reptiglos are no good i have decided to change to the reptisun 2.0 and reptisun 10.0.

The question i have is if the exo terra light unit says 2 x 40w 48in bulbs to be used (thats what the exo terra repti glo bulbs are), is it safe / can i use 2 x 36w 48in reptisun bulbs? or will they possibly blow / explode?

Also if i use the reptisun 10.0 in combination with the reptisun 2.0 do i still need to use a bright basking bulb or can i use a ceramic in place of a bright basking bulb? i read on here that if you dont use a bright basking bulb the uv strips can damage bd's eyes.
I only ask as marv (my bd) has a ceramic heater under his bed that i put on at night and during the day he will always go back to the ceramic heater to try and bask under it despite the fact its not hot enuff for basking, i think he prefers the heat emmited from the ceramic as opposed to a standard basking bulb.

Any help much appreciated

Hi, let's see if we can answer all your questions. First of all, good that you're getting the Repti-Sun bulb instead of using the Repti-Glo. Since the Repti-Sun are such good bulbs, you don't need a 2.0, the 10.0 is actually enough. The distance to that bulb should be 6 to 8" from the basking spot. There's no reason why you can't use the 36 watt in place of a 40 watt.

As far as using a ceramic heat emitter in place of a basking bulb, that really isn't a good idea. Beardies do much better with bright white basking bulbs, increases their activity level which in turn increases their appetite. It is also true that the fluorescent UVB's can be hard on their eyes so the white basking bulbs help to counteract any problems. You can just continue to use the CHE at night.

If you live in the U.S, you can get the Repti-Sun 10.0 fluorescent from www.petmountain.com for a very reasonable price and they are a great company to deal with.

Hope this covers all your questions/concerns.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
