Convincing my mother...

I have wanted a snake since I was 5 years old and have let my mother know it. She is very close to having a phobia of snakes, but everytime I see or hear about a snake, my heart rate speeds up and my thoughts go "Oh my god, it's gorgeous. If only..." I have tried placating myself with rats, tarantulas, beardies, and small wild caught lizards, but nothing seems as amazing and beautiful as a snake. I have spent hours doing my research on the internet and in reputable magazines. I don't think I can stand it anymore What can I do? I'm going to the Atlanta Repticon in August and I don't think I'll be able to stop myself from buying a baby ball or corn.

I used to try to push my mom to accept my snakes but realized best idea is turn 18, get your own home and then get any snake you want :lol: I mean it IS their house really, you're just a temporary resident.
You don't want to buy one without her permission, get it home and end up having to sell or give it away when she finds out.

As much as I really reall understand what you are thinking and feeling, I have to agree with Lacy. When you have your own place you can just set up anything you want.

there is a lizard like that. its called a glass lizard. just tell your mom about it and say you got one when you really got a red-tailed boa or one she doesn't know about

If anyone can think of a good way of convincing phobic parents, I'm all ears! I wanted one for about as long as you have, but there was no way I could ever get one as a pet. I had to move 1800 miles away first, and even then, I asked to make sure my parents would still visit if I got one!! Granted, they still think I only have one (I have five, with more coming soon); stuff's really gonna hit the fan when they find out....

I think it's possible to win them over, but it seems to take a long time and lots of patience. Mom has hated reptiles all her life, but my beardies won her over. I about crapped my pants when she pet and then HELD my beardies.

Type up a paper (the longer the better ) going over a species of snake you'd like (your mom would probably be more willing to accept a corn than a ball). Go over size, temperament, and care, which, for corns, is small, docile, and easy. Go over prices, where you'd go for a vet, etc.

I've used this many times and it has never failed me.

Get your mom to hold a baby Kenyan Sand Boa by calling it a worm, then once she has a hold of it tell her it is a snake. Kenyan Sand Boas can make good pets, but I would recomend starting with one that is around 20 grams or more as the smaller ones can be a little tricky initially for the inexperienced snake keeper. Males go around 2 feet long and females go around 3 feet. They don't get large and all they really need is a heat lamp and 10 to 20 gallon aquarium. They are almost easier than beardies to take care of since they don't need all the UV stuff. Feed them a proper size mouse, starting with pinkies on babies to full adult mice with adult KSB, once a week. Do litter patrol once a week and they are good to go!

^^ Agreed. I've never owned one, but from what I've read KSBs are great pets.
