Genes can affect it but I've never heard of sex being a factor. I've charted it in the past and never seen a significant swing either way gender-wise. Others may have a different experience on that but I've had massive dragons of both sexes.
As for genetics, there used to be a line of dragons called German Giants that consistently produced larger specimens. However, from what I understand the line has been extremely diluted and no pure GG's are left. In the past when certain morphs first came out, like trans for example, and dragons were being inbred a lot then those animals were usually plagued with issues but speaking from personal experience now it doesn't seem to affect them much anymore. The three different trans dragons I have had were all very big and super healthy. Diet and set up play a huge factor. Plenty of bugs, the right supplements and the correct lighting makes a world of difference.
