Hey guys, I found out my little guy is a girl yesterday, and I got a male today. He was purchased from dragonsden but I got him from a guy off of craigslist. He is a handsome little guy, I don't have pictures of him yet. There is the one on craigslist though. I just want to know what the typical behavior of a male is when he is around a female. I have them separated in the same 80 gallon tank, but they both seem to want on they others side. I talked to a guy at the pet shop he said this was normal and I should be able to take out the divider, I know most people on here say not to keep them in the same tank and right now they are separated BUT my questions are if this behavior is normal. I am contemplating breeding at first before I knew what I know now my plan was to just keep them in the tank no divider and if the deed was done then it was done.
Well I know now I can't do that but WHEN I am ready to let them attempt to "Do it", I would like to know if the behavior is normal.
When I first brought him home I placed my female in a foosball table that was turned into a caged area for guinea pigs. This was more convenient for me to make sure I could separate ASAP. Then placed him on the opposite side. He was just sitting there then darted off to her, "mounted" her and that scared me. This was before I talked to the guy about their behavior. He told me I could have females together and a male and female. Well after I got scared I pulled them apart, also I would like to know if that was smart. Is it alright for me to intervene like that? Well anyway after that I took them both to the shop to confirm their sexes and talk to the guy about what I just explained to you all. He told me that was normal and it should stop after a couple days. When I first got them back I fed them some worms. He was only interested in me and she chowed them all down. Later I added more and after she ate one he then did the same darting action but this time he was biting at her neck, he then proceeded to drag her to the other side of the tank with her in front and he pushed her against the glass. I pulled them apart and they were fine for a while. Well maybe 2 and a half to three hours later I put a salad in there and she didn't even approach it he just instantly did the same thing again. Needless to say they are separated and both sleeping like logs at the moment. The way I have it set up, their basking spot is next to each other which is keeping the temp on both sides to normal.
Also, side question because I was doing some reading while I was writing this. Since I didn't know my girl was a girl, I didn't have a tub for her to lay her eggs in. She did go through that thing where she stops eating in winter but I never saw the eggs. How can I get her to release her empty clutch or what ever. I read she can get sick if she doesn't. I also read when she is ready she will run around the cage and scratch and try to get out. Is this true?
Sorry if my questions seem silly. I'm just trying to get the best advice.
