Ciproflaxin after amputation?

Our baby beardie received an amputation this evening, and the doctor prescribed an 8 day course of Cipro. Beardie weighs 8 grams, is this safe? Anyone with experience or information on providing such a small beardie Cipro? Thank you in for your help!

We chose to today because from the 18th-today he has what appears to be tail rot that has accelerated in very quickly. Here is an image from the 18th vs. today (21st):

The vet we went to today confirmed that it was tail rot, and recommended amputation + 8 day course of cipro. I'm just horrified of giving this little guy cipro as he's so small.

Do you have a pic of the tail after amputation ? They generally don't need antibiotics but I guess the vet wants to be sure he didn't miss anything. Tracie will have to advise on the Cipro but like Karrie said the vet should have told you the dosage. There's a stickied thread at the top of this E.R. forum to explain how to read the doses using a syringe, it's helpful especially with small doses that can be confusing .

They did provide dosage. It's 15mg/ml and the instructions call for 2IU (3mg) every 48 hours for 8 days (4 doses). Just a lot of concerns with threads I've read on beardies being medicated to death.

Omg thank you! Yes I was told he weighs 8 grams, I can double-check with the vet today but that was the weight we were told. The cipro was constituted at 15mg/ml and the instructions call for 2IU every 48 hours, which (I believe?) comes to 3mg.

I'll hold off, until you suggest correct dosage, thank you!!

Looks a little funny, upturned or something. Is there a stitch in it by chance ? He should do well , is he eating already ? Of course it's early in the morn so maybe not yet. He looks good + alert though. He was not sedated was he ?

There does not appear to be any stitches. He is already eating very well. They did sedate him. I asked the same question prior and the vet said that it would be inhumane to operate without sedation.

It's not really an operation with such a small area, it's like getting a skin tag snipped off [ for lack of a better comparison ] But looks like everything turned out fine and the fact he's eating is great ! They don't feel much pain in the tail at all.

I hope so! I'm still unclear as to whether or not I should provide him with the Ciprofllaxin, just waiting on Terries thoughts.

How's the little guy doing ? Tracie should be able to help you tonight, she's usually on late evening. The vet should have showed you exactly how much in the syringe, that would have solved this whole problem.

He's doing well, eating as normal. They did show me how much to give him, I was just concerned as to the safety of it. I have read so many horror stories of beardies being sickened by antibiotics that we're giving unnecessarily. I held off as I'm not sure what to do.
