Hi there, im new to this site and wanted to start off by showing you a few pictures of my almost 3 year old beardy, Rango. I bought him from a pet store back in August where there told me he was about 2 or 2 and a half years old and this is what he looked like

Photo-0006.jpg

i thought he was kinda on the skinny side as he weighed in at about 315grms and was 16 inches long. i was told he was fully grown and might fill out just a little bit more. i fed him daily on fresh rocket, kale, grated carrot, bell peppers and strawberries and raspberries as a treat along with locust and morio worms every second day. as the weeks went on he seemed to get bigger and fast outgrew the 2.5 ft tank he was sold with shown in this pic as being a new owner i was unaware of how energetic he could be and how much he loves to run around and that this tank was kinda small

i purchased a new 4ftx2ftx2ft vivexotic vivarium in january and he has much more room now. with all the space i have been able to buy him a komodo basking ramp, little cactus, crocodile skull etc which makes me feel happier that his new set up has better equipment and gives him more room. the only problem i have now is i think he may be a little too chubby, im not sure. he is now 18 inches long and weighs around 495grms, maybe more, you may be able to see his belly seems a little bigger in these pictures

is he too chubby or is this a normal weight for a beardy this size. he doesnt run around as much as he use to before december but still eats just as much live food. his temperatures are correct, approx 37degress c on hot end and about 27degress c on cool end, uv light is less than 2 months old, etc so i dont think it has anything to do with husbandry issues, he eats live food as normal but only picks at veg. he sleeps more than he did before december but still goes to hot end of tank to bask on his rocks and often sleeps there if not under his basking platform in centre of tank. he didnt brumate this winter but just got less energetic during the day and slept earlier at night. im just wondering is it normal for them to be a little inactive at this time of year still or is excess weight slowing him down as my vet (who is not a reptile specialist) says hes the biggest dragon he has seen and thinks he weighs more than the average dragon usually does !!!! anyone got any comments that could be helpful i would love to hear them.

I am new to beardies but he looks great to me! He was soooo skinny when you got him and now he just looks healthy and happy. I honestly wouldn't worry too much about it.

Hello,

No, your dragon is not fat at all. He looks great! :D
He looks so cute & very happy too. They are supposed to have a nice little round beardie belly.
What UVB do you use? How often do you use calcium for him? As an adult, he needs maybe 40-50 feeders per week for maintenance along with greens & veggies.
It looks like he is doing just fine.

Hi Tracie, thanks for your post. I do my best to keep him happy. Right now im using a reptisun uvb thats less than 2 months old. I dust his food daily with nutrobal as im told they cant overdose on calcium using this. he gets a box of 5th hopper locust a week which usually contains about 10 and the rest of his live feeders for the week would be morio worms as i breed my own. ive tried with phoenix worms (he wont look at them) and dubai roaches which he loves, though i cant get a steady supply.

once the weather is nice (no less than 70 degrees, preferably in the 90s) take him outside. you can make a harness or purchase a custom made one.

he will most likely run all over the place to explore, getting lots of exercise.

Rango looks pretty good though

Hello,

I think his eating is just fine.
The nutrabol is good but you might want to consider a straight calcium powder to ensure he gets enough calcium. The nutrabol has vitamins & calcium in it so he may not get enough calcium with it.
He looks really happy! :D

He looks very happy & healthy, I wish mine would get a good belly like that. They're all up from brumation (I have 4 males) and they're not eating a whole lot right now, drives me nuts. I'm hoping their appetites come back soon. Just keep doing what you're doing & you can always use powder calcium as Tracie said.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
