Can someone explain all the different "types" of beardies?

I always thought bearded dragons were just the normal brownish tan color you see at the typical chain pet stores until I started looking around on the internet about info on them for when I went to purchase my 2 beardies. Could someone give a detailed explanation of this "breeder lingo" on the types of beardies? Some of these sound like nick names people make up (sandfire?) so I'm not sure what is the actual names of these colors or "morphs" as I've seen. Like het, double het, and so on.

The names you see like Sandfire, Citrus, Fire, Orange, Red, Lavender, and such are just morph names the breeder gave them. Like if you have a yellow dragon, it's not automatically a citrus, unless the breeder calls them that. Het stands for heterozygous. It means they hold both a recessive and dominant trait, so it's a possibility one or the other trait could be passed down. Leucistic means it is a snowy white with dark eyes, so it's not albino. Melanistic means it's dark, having extra melanin which is the dark pigment. Amelanistic is the opposite of that. I believe hypomelanistic means it has less black pigment as well. Pastel means really light pigmentation. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I believed these meant. Don't quote me on these, I'm probably wrong

All the recessive morphs are hypo(pastel), trans, market leucistic and recessive leather backs. Het means that they carry the gene (it doesn't show up in them) to pass on to some of their offspring. To get a visual recessive gene to show in offspring you need to have both parents at least het for it. You will get more offspring to show the trait if both parents have visual trait. And for the double hets that means that in one dragon there is two different recessive traits (example double het hypo/trans). For the co-dominant traits there is leatherback which you can either have a leatherback or a normal looking dragon. You can breed a leatherback to a normal and get leatherbacks out of it. When you breed two leatherbacks together you get a silkback that has no scales at all.

I don't know to much about the different colors and what they call them. i just go by what they look like and what i am looking for.

If you have anymore questions about different morphs just ask.

Google bearded dragon genetics. Click on the 1st link and it explains the morphs. Anything else is a colored dragon.

I just thought of another related question, and instead of posting another thread I thought I'd ask here.

I've seen some instances of "some" blue/purple coloring on beardies, and obviously some have black color. Have there been any bearded dragons bred to be all black or all "blue/purple"???

So far the only colors I've generally seen are (and obviously mixes of shades between):
Yellow
Red
Orange
Translucent/Clear
Brown
Tan
White

Any others I've missed?

I have seen some beardeds that bloodbank produce that give off a purple hue (most are translucent that have that). I don't know if they keep that color as they get older or not. I have only seen purple dragons being sold by bloodbank.

With the black i have heard of some people trying to breed for only black pigment with selective breeding, But i don't know if they are having any success with the project. If anyone else has an update on this i would love to hear about it.

Sorry but a dragon can not be Het for a marketing term. All a leucistic is is a light colored to white hypo.

Yes bloodbank has a purple trans line and once produced a almost black trans named darth vader (located on their website under gallery and 2008 dragons)

Here is a website that shows that you can have a het for marketed leucistic. A marketed leucistic is not a true leucistic but there is still people out their calling their dragons het for marketed leucistic because that is what the parent was sold to them as. Just by saying it is a marketed leucistic means that the parents were very white and they should turn out the same way. And yes it is the same as the hypo gene, it is compatible but they are the whitest of the white when it comes to bearded dragons. When you are buying a marketed leucistic you should know that that dragon will be very white just by the name.

That information from Dachiu is around 10 years old.

also, from what you are saying, you feel they are the same yet different. How can that work out for you?

Here is a good for instance.

I have a Orange Hypo and a Cawley red Het Hypo, their pairing produced quite a few white babies, paper white, so in your "deffinition" I would call them Marketed Leucis. Why? They are hypos and nothing more. Marketed leucistic is tagged onto a animal for one reason and one reason only, to help that animal be sold at a slightly higher price because its a "special" hypo. Thats just like calling a dragon a red that is grey/brown/normal, just because its parents were red. Sorry but I have to call a spade a spade. Calling a dragon Het for Marketed Leucistic is not just wrong its a flat out lie.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
