Brumation and very bad sore

First just a quick question, is it normal for dragons to brumate in the middle of summer? I'm just wondering cause my dragon hasn't really come out of his cave for the past week or two. He still looks like hes in perfect condition, looks like hes got a good weight, still eats little bits here and there etc. I just read that brumation is like hibernation, i just find it weird that its the middle of summer.

And now for the bad part, my other beardie has an infection in her mouth. We went to see a veterinarian, he gave us oral medication for 10 days and said to come back if she needed more, so we went back for a second set and it still doesn't look like its getting better. Her mouth is so swollen that when she opens her mouth you cant see her tongue. Shes had this for a couple months now, shes still kept eating, but shes starting to slow down a bit. It's difficult for her to eat, nothing sticks to her tongue and its hard for her to chew, im going to schedule another appointment this week, but i thought i could ask here to see if anyone has any ideas what it ould be or how to help. I'm really worried :? :(
Thanks

How old is your boy? Has he lost any weight? It's not really brumation season I suppose, but it's not uncommon for them to slow down a bit even in summer. Just monitor his weight and make sure he maintains it.

As for your girl, that infection doesn't look too good. What tests did your vet do? It may be worth a second opinion. In the meantime, try wiping the area with some MaxiGuard on a q-tip to try and cleanse the area and see if that helps. That works as a topical antiseptic and can be used to treat mouth rot. It may be worth a try in this case barring expert opinion.

He's about two years now, and not really, hes been maintaining a great weight for his size even thought he hasn't really been eating much.

And i don't think he really did any tests, i'm pretty sure he just opened her mouth, looked at it and then he gave us the oral medication. Looking at it, it looks like its something that's gonna need to be removed. Is there a certain place i should be looking in stores for maxigaurd?

It's possible that it will need to be removed but I wouldn't trust a procedure like that to anyone other than an experienced reptile vet if possible. If you have a veterinary teaching hospital in the area that may be a good option. When I used MaxiGuard I got it from the vet. It is available on Amazon as well.

Hello,

It sounds like your boy is doing well, just slown down some. A lot of dragons do go down or start slowing down for brumation during summer time. If he is maintaining his weight, it sounds like he is healthy.
That does look somewhat painful in your girl's mouth. That is good to hear she is still eating right now. Has she been maintaining her weight, too?
The Maxiguard is very good so if you get a chance you could try that out. It would definitely be best to be sure the vet is experienced since you are dealing with surgery most likely to remove it.
Are you housing them separately?
I would keep her around 80 overnight in her tank, just to help boost her immune system in case of infection right now. You can use a ceramic heat emitter for heating.
Let us know how she is doing.

i live in a small area, i'm surprised we even have a reptile vet, we asked the rescue in our area and they always go to him too.
She is defiantly maintaining her weight haha, shes always been a piggy so she may be just a little overweight.
When we first got him we thought "he" was a "she" so we thought we would just leave them together for a bit, i've realized now, with a bunch of little dragons running around that it may not have been the best idea :silent: although its been quite the experience
i've tried separating them and they both get stressed out and wont calm down, so once the babies are all gone, i'm going to try separate them when i'm not here to keep an eye on them and maybe let them stay together at nights and when i can watch them. I'm not sure if separating them will just encourage them more when they actually see each other? I'm just not sure what to do.
I will ask my vet about the MaxiGuard when i get the appointment set up.
Thanks.

Hello,

Well, at first, they will have a bit of stress of separation because it is different but they will adjust. It really is better than to have them continuously breeding. It is very hard & stressful on the female to be overbred & lay too many eggs. They can lay 4-6 clutches sometimes from one breeding/mating.
I am glad she is maintaining her weight & otherwise doing well.
Let us know how her mouth is doing!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
