blood in stool

good afternoon!
This morning our 1.75 year old beardie pooped a normal poop then was straining to poop more and then passed blood.
Hi behavior has been absolutely normal ( apatite and energy and poops) until this.
We brought him to the vet; she was great, said he looked great and prescribed deworm-albon/ exotic large .4 ml once a day for 21 days; we also sent a fecal sample in.
is there any other explanation for a bloody stool? if he does have parasites, is there any way to prevent/ clean them?
is there anything he will need while on the dewormer?

Hi Katie, hopefully he'll be fine even if he does have parasites. So did your vet do the fecal test before prescribing the Albon ? That's what I got from what you wrote. Albon is prescribed for coccidia and is pretty harsh med. that you would not want to give your dragon unless you have a positive test for coccidia. Although he may very well have parasites, there are other causes for blood in the stool....sometimes dehydration and/or a very large poo can be accompanied by a bit of blood.

If he DOES have coccidia, ask the vet about Ponazuril, it's the newer,preferred drug which can get rid of it in a few days.

Puddle had been acting perfectly normal/ healthy before this morning.
I will call the vet in the am and see when the fecal results will be back and ask about the alt meds

Good afternoon!
So puddle does have coccidia and pin worms.
I gave him the Albon yesterday, and today he is very lethargic and his apatite is way down and no poop this morning ( he usually poops every morning). I talked to the vet and asked about Ponazuril, and she called that in for him.
Could he be lethargic and not feeling great b/c of the Albon? Is there anything I can do for him? I feel so bad for our little buddy!
And, how do they get parasites? Puddle spends time in his terririum inside, walks around the house, and spends time in his terrirum outside.
I'm not sure what to do; he is lethargicly on his basking rock.
I really appreciate this site and all of the help I've received so far!

Hi Katie, yes the Albon could have made him lose his appetite, so can a trip to the scary vet's office. Good thing you'll be getting Ponazuril, I've read that 3 doses can kick coccidia. If you need help with dosing, send a p.m. to Drache613, she can help with that.

He should be O.K, parasites + meds. can get them a little off their food + energy levels but they usually bounce back very well. Do you have pics of him ?

Puddle is not that hungry and not as active (only one superworm, no greens, lethargic in tank). I dosed him yesterday with the Ponazuril yesterday and he needs another dose tomorrow evening. we've been bathing him,
is there anything I can do to help him feel better?
Vet wasnt sure about probiotic or soy honey.
I hate seeing that he just doesn't feel well.

Every dragon reacts to being medicated in a different way, Puddle may be kind of queasy. So is there just one dose of Ponazuril left ? If he'll take some of the probiotic or soy honey, go ahead and give him some. As for the baths, only do so if he's drinking in there, if he gets stressed then only bathe him once a week. He should be fine after the meds. are over with, or hopefully even before. You might offer him some baby food squash or pureed squash, maybe a bit of chicken baby food as well.
