Blood From Cloaca

i was pretty dumb and introduced my male and female bearded dragon for breeding at night when they were both asleep. so i awoke to some blood in the tank. it seems to all be from my males cloaca. it's on the females leg, as if they tried to breed and something went horribly wrong. many concerns here. is my male ok? is his hemipene permanently damaged? can the other hemipene make up for this one?

You separated them right away right? If your male has been hurt put some bentadine iodine on it. I would message Drache613 (tracie) she is a monitor. She will know more specifics on what to do.

they don't fight at all. but i woke up to another bloody cloaca this morning on the male, and blood on the females thigh leading to her cloaca. so i assume another bloody breeding. i don't get why there is blood. and i can't rub any medicine on his hemipene. everything seems fine, he head bobs, they don't fight or interact at all. they stay near each other so no one is scared of the other.

Hi Spydr....what has happened is that as the male attempts to breed, they use their back claws to help grasp the female and they end up cutting their hemipenis. You will want to keep the female out of his tank for a few weeks to enable healing, and you can't actually put anything on it because it is retracted back in the cloaca. I've had it happen to a couple of males over the years. He will heal, but he will also be susceptible to doing the same thing again. You may want to cut the back claws to keep them shorter + duller....just don't cut them too short so they bleed. Look for the quick and be sure not to go beyond.
