Behavior and appetite while shedding - please help!

My little Leela is gaining weight, which is so good..but obviously with that comes the shedding - lots and lots of it!

This is her first big shed since I've rescued her,and it's been going on for about a week now. I have been browsing through the shed-related topics so I know the drill: I am giving her a daily bath, where I gently rub her with a soft toothbrush to loosen the skin. She tolerates it, which makes it much easier for me! :D I even put a little bit of olive oil in the water (very small amount) which also seemed to help. Normally I can't get her to stay in the tub, but she must know it's helping because her resistance is breaking down every day!

However, it's only been the last two days where I have noticed her appetite for greens is really low (crickets, no problem!) and she is a bit lethargic. Last night she went to bed early, about 2 hours before she normally does. I usually shut the UVB off at about 9-ish and the basking light stays on until about 11 - she is a night owl! 8)

But last night I could see how tired she looked and I wrapped her in the "burrito blankie" at 9, shut all the lights off, and she was out cold within a minute or two. This morning at 9am, she was awake, but still in the blankie. After the lights went on, she stayed in it for half an hour, which is highly unusual, as she normally bolts up the basking tree to warm up!

Anyway, the last two days have been unique in regards to her appetite and behavior - yet I've also seen the most shed coming off, too, in really big pieces! So is that the reason? I mean, it seems like a logical conclusion, but I'm a worrier! Any input or advice is appreciated!

Hello Caterina,

It sounds like it could be the shed, especially since you mentioned the most of it just coming off. Most beardies get a bit ornery during sheds. My girl gets even more lazy then she already is and could care less about eating when she's shedding.

Just to be on the safe side though....have you ever gone over your set up with anyone on here?

Hi Dawn,
Thanks for the response! As I said, I know that her behavior has to be due to the shed, but I worry because I never had a baby beardie, so a lot of the stuff (like shedding) they grow up doing is unfamiliar to me. This is the first shed that I have witnessed her go through, you know?

Her set-up: 40 gallon terrarium with lots of floor space; Repti-Sun 10.0 UVB and a 100 Watt heat bulb in a ceramic Flukers lamp; basking temps are about 100 degrees, and the cool side temps are about 75-80.
I put in a slate tile floor last week, and she seems to like it. I also have some nice rocks in there (they were disinfected and cleaned very well) that she rubs on to help with the shed.
She eats a big salad mix of escarole, collard greens, and babyfood squash in the morning, has about 10-15 crickets in the afternoon, and then a small salad w/fruit chunks for dinner - cantalope being her favorite fruit so far.

I'm happy to report that MOST of her shed is gone, at least the head, back, and limbs. There are still some stubborn areas on the belly that she won't let me get at. And...her appetite is back!

That's great! So it probably was just the shed.
How is she behaving, is she still lethargic or have you seen a difference in that also?

She is more active today. She went to bed early last night, again, but this morning she seems better. I'm just hoping that the next shed won't be so hard for her. It breaks my heart when she looks so unhappy. :(

Thanks again for the reassurance!! It helps to know I'm not crazy. (well, that's debatable :p )

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
