Beginning of MBD?...

So, I noticed yesterday that Rupert seems to throw one of his back legs up and it looks like he is scratching his head like a dog. I'm not sure if this is the "twitching" referred to during MBD development or if it's just a quirk with Beardies. He doesn't look to be shedding on his head and he isn't wet when he does it. I think he's actually been doing it a lot (including while he tries to sleep), but I don't watch him 24/7 and count how many times. In the past hour or so he's done it once...maybe 2-3 times today that I saw.

He gets ~40-50 crickets a day depending on if he'll actually eat. 5 days calcium dusted 2 days vitamin dusted. His UV-B has been sufficient for the past 4 months and I figure I'll replace it in 2-3 months (the recommended is 8 months?). I can't remember what brand it is, but I got it by suggestion at the Petstore (not one of the big pet-stores...these people are actually trusted to house peoples Reptiles while they are on vacation). I think I posted about it to ask so I'll edit this with the info.

The calcium and vitamins are the ones people always suggest in these forums and the UV bulb covered about 90% of his cage (the other 10% is underneath stuff and he doesn't sit there much).

His basking spot gets to 105 and his cool spot sits around 85. He is about 5 months old (I believe a few days over 5 months) and has been healthy as can be.

Is the "twitching" people refer to actually violent twitching that seems uncontrollable or is it more like they're trying to scratch? I wouldn't ask if he only did it a couple times, but he actually does it quite a bit. I should also mention that he's noticed himself in the glass of his cage and keeps dancing along it. It seems like he is distressed so I'll take him out and have him sit with me.

**Update while posting this. His lights are off and he just did it again...**

Edit: The UV bulb is a Pro-Lume 15W fluorescent. It's a tube light, not a compact bulb.

The twitching does not look like scratching in my beardie. Sometimes its just little tremors in the toes, or her head bobs. When I pick her up her body goes stiff, too much stress will cause the MBD to go further and her legs will splay out and get stiff and flail.
Maybe mites? Is it always the same spot that is being scratched? Shedding?

Umm, I just googled Pro-Lume, and it is just a regular fluorescent tube... It puts out no UVB what-so-ever. What ever pet store recommended this to you, I would not listen to them in the future.

For a UVB light, you need one that is specifically made for reptiles, and says on the box that it gives off UVB. Get the ReptiSun 10.0 fluorescent tube at petmountain.com. Those are one of the best right now.

All Fluorescent bulbs put out UV (UVA and UVB) no matter what...it's just a matter of what the output is. I've had him with this one for 4 months now and he's been completely fine. He's not growing oddly, acting oddly (aside from this behavior), his colors are almost always vibrant...if the UV light were the problem I believe he would've developed issues by now especially since he's so young.

That being said I did order a Reptisun 10.0 tube to be on the safe side and it should be here in the middle of next week. I understand the bulb I'm using was manufactured primarily to be used by humans for visible light, but this Pet-store is nothing like Petsmart or PetCo or any other place that keeps/sells pets. Granted, I think they're more of an avian store, they are trusted by many people to actually hold their pets while they are unable to (vacation, etc) and these are the bulbs they use. Their reptiles also look extremely healthy and they're in better condition than what I've seen at the giant stores.

**Also, I haven't seen him do this maneuver yet today and by Erimis' description I don't think it's involuntary twitching. I've looked on him twice over from head to end-of-tail and can't see any tiny off-colored spots. Anything that goes into his cage from the outside gets baked for 15 minutes at 400 degrees. And he's only been outside himself a few times about 3 and a half months ago when it was 100 degrees. Then one day it was 40 degrees and he could no longer be outside.

Your right, all fluoresents put off uvb- a very small amount-but not NEARLY enough for a dragon. If this was the case, none of us would spend 20-60$ every 6 months on a special kind of uvb light for our reptiles, we would all just go to Lowes and buy the pro lume. This bulb puts out UVA, which is also important in your dragons health. If your dragon does not have MBD now, he will get it. Google the amount of uvb a dragon needs, the amount a reptile bulb, like the Reptisun, and the amount a normal fluoresent light put out- its significantly lower. Its very good that you ordered the Reptisun, you would be playing with fire if you didnt. I believe you will see an improvement in your dragons overall activity levels and appetite after using the Reptisun for a few days. Good luck :)

^ Agreed. MBD sometimes takes years to start showing physical signs, depends on the genetic structure of the dragon.

Great that you ordered the reptisun 10.0 tube, it is an awesome light. Keep us updtaed on your little one and a side note we all love pics!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
