Beardies for dummies

Hi all,

I introduced myself and our new 5-mo old beardie a few days ago. So far so good, I think, but I have a few questions (total newbie!) and figured I'd ask here rather than in different specific forums - please bear with me.

1. We have a 40B glass tank for him (18x17x36, I think?), with a screen top (cats in the house!). I mounted a 24" under-counter fixture inside at the top of the back wall with a reptisun 10.0. My question here is that I realize now that a 10.0 is far different from a 10.0 HO (High output). Mine is a high output bulb. Is it too much? I have it in the back top of the tank, and the basking log and spot are near the front (was afraid hot basking light would melt/wreck plastic UVB fixture). We have a hammock in the back corner (opposite from basking corner) that's about 6-8 inches from the reptisun but so far Blaze never seems to go in the hammock or even on the cool side of the tank unless he's chasing a cricket. He's always on the warm end of the tank on or under the logs.

2. We have a 150-watt zoo med repti basking spot lamp over his basking log, but it seems to be getting too hot. The 100-watt I had at first didn't seem hot enough, so I'm waffling between the two. He basks nearby, but not in the hottest spot under the lamp. I might try the 100 watt again to see if gets warm enough. I don't want to roast him! He also closes one eye sometimes while basking, wonder if that means its too much.

3. On the cool side, I put in a fluker's daylight full-spectrum bulb to add some light and heat since it was a little cool (70s) and now with that light its between 80 and 90 depending on where exactly I check. But, then I read somewhere here that neodymian bulbs are bad because they block some of the color hues? Yes? I also read an article on this site suggesting regular compact fluorescent daylight bulbs, but aren't those "CFLs", which are also "bad guys"? So confused.

4. Crickets are evil. Learning my lesson slowly after receiving my shipment of 500 of them yesterday. Trying to get them from the shipping box into the big tub I setup for them was a disaster, LOL. Really glad I didn't do it inside the house, ha ha. Caught a few with the broom and later regretted that because who knows what dirt/toxin I introduced from the garage floor (not dirty, per se, but a car parks there!). There are now lots of dead crickets (a bunch were dead from original box) in the tub along with more that died overnight. Still lots alive, but I know I have to get the dead ones out in order to save the rest. HOW I will do that, I have no idea.... oh boy! Worms are sounding more and more appealing. No roaches, I'm not there yet (hate roaches more than crickets, for now anyway).

So so thankful for this forum! Not sure what I'd do without it!

I'd stay with the 150w basking bulb but try to move it slightly higher to dial in the temp. I'd lose the daylight bulb on a tank that small. It sounds like it's making the cool side too warm. The dragon will move around to regulate temperature so don't worry about that too much. Just have a basking area 100-110 available and a cool side available 75-85 or so during the day and above 65 or so at night.

As for the crickets, I use a box cutter and cut the side off the box and then dump the whole cricket load into the tank. I have them live in cardboard on one side of the tank with the food and water on the other. To clean it I shake out the cardboard on one side then move it to the other and chase the live crickets over to the cardboard. I remove the substrate (I use wood chips for hamsters etc) on the empty side to get rid of the dead crickets and other stuff. I then put down new substrate and then move the cardboard back to that side. I then repeat on the other side. It's not too bad once you get a routine down. I also noticed that the crickets were much happier with warmer temps. My basement was in the mid 60s in the winter and when I put a tank heating pad on the outside of their tank they congregated around it and were much happier with temps in the 70s.

You can also try a light dimmer switch which would eliminate changing bulbs all the time. That worked wonders for me!

Thanks for the replies!

I do have a light stand still in the box, so maybe I'll try to put the 150w bulb a little higher...or I actually also have a dimmer I might try for that first and leave it where it is. Right now its sitting on the screen top. I'm going to try removing the daylight bulb and see how the temps stay.

I'll bet my garage is too cold for the crickets, darn it. Hmmm, Plan B....wonder how I can safely keep a big plastic tub a little warmer without melting anything. Time to get creative...

Thanks...I'll surely be back with more ????

Any comments on the High-output vs regular Reptisun 10.0?

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
