Hi all. I went to my local pet store today and I saw a beardie do something very weird. and I wanted to know if anyone knew what it could possiably be...
First, i do know that this animal was dropped off . She was placed with a few other beardies that the pet store had. This occured on Monday. I go back today to pick crickets and I notice that the beardie (who looks pregnant)
shaking in a shivering matter. I know very well that it has nothing to do with lighting or the tempature. This beardie looks very healthy. She would walk a distance, stop, shake and move again, stop and shake. I found this to be very odd. Could beardies also have seizures?
Thanks for your help

Hello,

That would most likely be metabolic bone disease in its early stages which is hypocalemia. They can appear in very good health physically but be suffering from low calcium which will cause seizures, tremors, muscular seizing or the inability to move the limb, etc.
If the dragon is in the pet store, chances are it has no UVB lighting at all which is probably going to be the culprit.
Since she is gravid, if she is too young, she most definitely is not getting adequate calcium & UVB in the pet store to maintain her eggs much less her own system. So, if she is gravid her eggs are going to suffer if she is deficient right now.

Are you going to take her in?

HI, and thanks for the insight. I am going to keep checking up on her to see how she is doing at the pet store. I am going to be out of town for a couple of days, so I really did not want to take her on yet (I want to devote my time to her). But when I get back though, I may just have an eighth beardie. Thanks again Tracie
Take cae--

Hello Karen,

Definitely keep me posted on her. I hope that she will be alright while you are gone. You will most likely end up with another dragon though! :D Is there anyone at the store that can help her out a little bit more possibly?

My plan was to keep her at the pet store while I was gone (before I took her on). I am boarding a few of my my other rescues there while I'm away; because The 2 I do have do need special attention. I know all are in good hands with them. I'll most likely call the pet store every day to see how all of them are doing (I'm a concerned mama). I'll keep you posted.
Take care

Hello Karen,

That is nice you are able keep your other rescues there at the pet store while you are away. So are they going to get a good UVB light for her then? That is surprising that the pet store is actually knowledgeable on keeping reptiles, too.

I am sure you will check on her often. :D

I trust this pet store with me animals (Reptile Island)! This will be the 2nd time I have boarded with them. I am having my sisiter in law taking care of the other animals (I trust that she'll feed them and water them) The condos are on timer so there is no need to turn lights on and off.
But as well as I know myself, I'll call and ask, "Did u give Dubbo and Darwin their meds?" :Are they eating their veggies?"
Just drive the owner crazy-LOL
Take care

Hi Tracie!
Went to reptile Island to board Darwin and Dubbo (I miss them already :( ) today and the beardie who is expecting babies was still there. She looked alright to me. The owner said that she was fine; he said she wasn't doing the shaking anymore. But I am going to still check up on her (by phone) when I call to see how my little ones are. Take care and i'll continue to keep you posted on her condition.

Hello Karen,

That is hard having to board your babies for a little while. It is better than leaving them alone though.
Hopefully the female will be ok. She wasn't doing any shaking then? Maybe the owner started adding some more calcium for her. Did he put in a UVB light possibly?
Great, just let me know if there is any change.

Well P/U my "kids" 2day; after a 4 day absence from them. The gravid girl was not in her enclousure. Apparently she has been digging so they moved her 2 a "birthing room". When I saw her last (4/11) she wasn't shaking and the owner of the shop said she was still fine. My 2 dragons look really good. I missed on 4 days of recovery w/ them; but still a long road 4 them (many more days for me to enjoy their progress).
Take care---
KAREN

P.S, sorry 4 the short hand typing LOL

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
