Hey all,

Not sure whats up with Bub. I found her (literally) at about 7 inches in late July. She's 14 inches now 11/25/09. She's been a ravenous beast the entire time I've had her - she could pound 40 - 50 crickets a day, and now that she's on supers she used to eat ten a day + collared / mustard greens. It's gross, but it used to have massive poops, 2 - 3 inches with lots of urate. Now it poops once every three days and it's very very small, almost smaller than a mealworm.

As far as I've read, she's not old enough for brumation, so I really think something is wrong with her. She has eaten a few bites of greens and maybe two supers in the past three weeks. She seems otherwise ok - she basks, walks around the cage, and will writhe in my hand if I don't support it's legs. She's always been lazy so that doesn't trouble me. Seems very tired though.

Here's some background info:

How long is your dragon? 14 inches
What is the sex of your dragon? Pretty sure female.
What type substrate do you have on the bottom of your tank? Travertine tile
Do you use UVB lights? tes
If so, Is it a coil, compact, fluorescent tube, or Mercury Vapor bulb? fluorescent tube
What is the brand name and number of your bulb? Wattage (if MVB)? ReptiSUN 10.0 24"
How old is your UVB bulb? about two months
How close can your dragon get to the UVB? Within 6 inches, I can arrange the cage so it can be two inches
Do you use a separate basking bulb? What kind and what is the wattage? yes and its a 90 watt regular white tint house bulb
What are the basking temps? 115
What is the cool side temp? Stays between 68 and 75
Do you take the temps with a stick on thermometer, a digital thermometer with a wire and a probe end or a temp gun? Digi with barometer
Where exactly are you taking your basking temps? where he basks, right under the light
Do you use a heat rock or heat pad? He basks on a brick - the brick is not heated but retains heat.
What do you feed your dragon? Please be specific. Superworms, collared greens, mustard greens - occasionlly carrots, green beans, and tomatos
How often do you feed and what time do you feed (morning, afternoon, night)? Feed greens in morning, replace next morning. Supers were eaten when put in the cage twice a day. Now the same two have been walking around for a while.
Do you gutload (feed) your crickets, worms, etc? Yes with collared greens and strawberries
Do you use vitamin or calcium supplements? What brand(s)? How many days a week do you use each of them? T-rex supplement occasionally on supers.
Is your dragon having regular bowel movements (poops)? Used to have two inch poops almost every day, now they're very small and about once every three days.
Do you bath your dragon? How often? Once a week
Do you mist your dragon or offer water other than in the bath? No and no
Does your dragon share an enclosure with another dragon? no
Have you gotten a vet check and fecal done? no

I'm not sure what could be wrong with your beardie, but if anything I would suggest that you start giving her baths more frequently in the meantime. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, I hope it isn't anything too serious :( Although I believe a 1 yr old dragon isn't 'too young' to go into brumation...

Also, just curious ;), what did you mean when you said you found her?

What do I mean when I say I found her? I mean that I walked past the laundry room and it was just sitting there, looking at me - completely unharmed but a bit skinny. Totally docile, and completely healthy. Ate crickets the same day.

I think the cat dragged her in, or it just escaped from someone nearby.

Anyway, I'll give it more baths but as it is she never drinks from it - i have to roll the water down its nose so it licks it up.

Honestly because of the way I came across her, I cannot determine her age. She could have been living outside (or inside for that matter) for months, but I found her at 8". I live in CA, so the elements don't really conflict with reptiles.

That's interesting, how you found her!

Also, don't worry if she doesn't drink for the bath. They will absorb moisture through their vent. This is how they stay hydrated when they brumate in the wild. They will burry down into the soil and will absorb moisture from the soil to stay hydrated. If you can get her to drink it, that is even better :)

I hope someone with more experience can chime in and help you figure out why your beardie is acting strangely. Good luck!

She just might be going into brumation.

You might want to have a fecal test just to be sure. If all is well, bet on brumation.

Keep her comfy and offer her foods of all sorts to include baby food.

Got it. She seems healthy otherwise. A little less alert, but she was always kind of a lazy bum.

Baby food? Should I just put a small amount with her regular food?

Is this supposed to last the whole winter?

Thx!

With the baby food, you mix a few drops of water in it to dilute it a bit, and you feed by itself to her using either a needle-free syringe, a dropper or you can just use a spoon. Place a few drops on her nose and see if she licks it off, and continue doing that until she's done.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
