Hello. New to the forum.

So I have just rescued a bearded dragon. She was with my girlfriends friend initially, who literally did not care about her anymore and abandon her. She was in her tank hiding when I went to get her. Her tank was tucked away into a corner, covered with dust (she was left there for weeks or maybe more).

There was no heat lamps, no lighting, bone dry water dish and was not fed for weeks and weeks.

Fortunately, she was still alive when I got her from the house.

I tried everywhere to see who could take her in who knew what they were doing, but its a lot harder than i imagined to find someone who will take in a reptile, at least for the area I'm in.

Anyways, shes with me now. I have reptiles of my own, but never have had a bearded dragon, nor have I ever tried to rehabilitate a rescue animal of any kind back to good health.

I normally research months before I actually get the reptile, but in this case, I wanted her out of that environment asap. So now, im learning how to care for beardies as I go.

They are surprisingly similar to my Uromastyx care.

She's eating mealworms extremely well. Shes moving around and basking in her spot (100f). She doesnt seem interested in crickets, no matter how I try feeding them to her. She ate some greens i left out for her as well (bok choy).

So, my question is, does anyone have any tips on what I should be doing to get her in better health? Shes very skinny and has next to no weight to her. It's quite sad.

Any info is much appreciated, thank you everyone.

Pathetic!! I am so glad you stepped in - why do people get animals and do that to them? I am sure Cooperdragon will step in and tell you what you should have as far as her tank set up but at least you are feeding her-- she might like Dubia Roaches you can try them - I have been ordering roaches on line from Dubiaroaches.com I dont know where you live but the big box stores do not sell them in my my area - only crickets- and you might mix some greens like mustard and collards there is a list on this site that have feeding ideas w/ ages etc............ she will need a basking and UVB light - I am surprised she is not dead - depending on how long she was in that situation that you got her out of--- good luck w/ her and please keep us posted!

How is the dragon doing?

Hey! She's doing okay. She refuses to eat any insect except mealworms. Now I know if you feed too much of these, they can cause impaction. Is there anything you recommend in this situation?

Beardies do get spoiled with a fave food item so that's no surprise. :) Is she a big dragon, adult size of decent weight ? Can you post pics of her + her set up ? It may take a wile for her to switch over. Here's how to post pics :

Thank you very much! Will do this soon. Is there anything you recommend if the only thing she'll eat is mealworms? Iv read this causes a risk for impaction if this is the main thing on her diet.

If she is of adult size you can go with superworms. They look almost the same but will be better than mealworms. Dubias and crickets are better as well as silkworms but they are hard to get sometimes. You can feed wax worms and hornworms as treats. Pheonix worms (aka black soldier fly larvae, calciworms) are very good for them but they are small so you will feed a lot of them. The beautifuldragons nutrition list is a good reference. I get my superworms from http://www.rainbowmealworms.net/ (can get hornworms and waxworms too)
Pheonix worms from https://symtonbsf.com/collections/live-black-soldier-fly-larvae/products/large-feeding-grade-grubs

If you would like to feed her something better in the meantime you can use turkey or chicken baby food mixed with baby food squash or green beans.

Have you tried feeding your beardie waxworms? A lot of beardies tend to enjoy those a lot, plus they can help put weight on your beardie. I'd love to see photos as well

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
