Hey guys, I haven't posted in forever so I apologize! Taj is now Freya as "he" laid eggs.
Anyway the true reason for my post:
I recently moved to NYC and my coworkers and I went to the Petco in the Upper East Side to look at some pet stuff together. While there we saw a sign for a dragon up for adoption that was "special needs." I, of course, had to see him and started quizzing the employees. Here is the story of him that I got so far: Some person left him in a box on Petco's door step and he was near-death; could not move. He is an adult male and I think he is still probably pretty young, maybe 2 years old, but am not sure. He has MBD. The vet at Petco put him on some kind of medication, I do not know what it was but that it was high calcium. He is on a 24-hour lights on schedule and is eating well. he has a nice full belly and alert eyes. He can move his front limbs better than his back limbs and does move around his cage some, but doesn't have the greatest range of motion with hind limbs. His fat deposits have not bounced back and might not I guess. He has little to no muscle tone in his limbs and cannot hold up his tail. He has bowel problems and thus is bathed 2-3x a day. I do not know exactly what they are feeding him. He has some sores; I saw one on his spine and on the side of his right rear knee. He is losing spines as well. He is mostly all gray and black but is yellow around his eyes. His eyes are not cloudy, I did not inspect his ears. His vent does not completely close, but I think that is more from dried feces. I don't know.
To be honest, this is the first time I've seen an MBD this bad in person and was overwhelmed. I do not know if he will bounce back to a certain degree like some abused dogs do. If he is going to recuperate he needs constant care by either a rescue or someone who really knows their herps. For once, this isn't Petco's fault and they are doing the best they can but you can tell that they aren't really sure what to do. I took their business card and said I would try to find someone or a rescue who could devote the time to him. I would take him if I could, but I know that with my job it would not be possible.
So this is my post asking if ANYONE knows of a rescue in NYC, Long Island, NJ, or Down State NY that will adopt him or someone here that is local and has experience who can adopt him. I don't think Petco wants money for him, but again I didn't ask directly.
He may be too bad to be helped and should be put down, but I just don't know. I also know that we can't save them all, but I feel it is my duty as a responsible pet owner to at least try. I also posted this in r/herpetology on Reddit and have a contact in upstate NY that may know someone. Please write here, or email me at [email protected]. Thank you for reading and hug your pets.
