Bearded Dragon Lost in House

If you've lost your beloved beardie in the house, Above all DO NOT give up hope that he will return. We lost our 3 year old bearded dragon 4 weeks ago in the house. He was out running around stretching his legs, which we have let him do before, and we took our eyes off of him for what felt like just a second. All of a sudden he was gone. 5 of us searched high and low for an hour. Every nook and cranny and every warm dark spot like around the refrigerator and dryer. For a week I put out his food and water and heat lamp. To no avail, he never showed up. We have 2 small dogs and they've never had any interest in each other before, so I'm not sure if this is coincidental or not, but the dogs and their food and water dishes were removed yesterday to go for a visit. When I came home I glanced into the laundry room and sitting square in the middle of the floor was our long lost beardie! To say the least we were so excited. We assumed he was gone. The theory is that he was in the laundry room the whole time and that the removal of the dogs and his source of water moved him out of hiding. So don't give up hope whatever you do.

We have four beardies; Ed, Junior, Rex and Spike. Ed is the oldest and has been with us for almost six years. Junior is a little younger and the two twins (Rex and Spike) are the offspring of the older two.

ALL four have been missing in our house more times than I can remember. They all share one giant glass cage that is up against a window sill. They can climb up onto the window and stare out at the sunny day for hours on end. They come down to eat, poop and play. Occasionally, they will crawl along the window to a point past their cage an drop down the the floor. Once on the floor, they explore the area for a bit, and then disappear like ninjas.

I would say that we "lose" a dragon at least four-five times a week. (Yes, a WEEK.) This has happened so often, that we know where all of their hiding spots and favorite destinations are:

Edward is adventurous but solitary. He tends to find new places, but his pattern is predictable. He will always head to the large boys room. Plenty of laundry and toys to hide in.

Junior is lazy. She usually stays where she is, but if she does get out, she will find the closest dark spot and hunker down.

Rex is frisky and rambunctious. If she drops down, she will let you know. She often roams the house for hours.

Spike is careful and shy. Before he drops, he will grab onto the nearby curtain and climb to safety. It is always a hoot to find a beardie hiding on the ceiling. If he does get down, he stays in the room. The rest of the house looks too dangerous for him.

TIP: I don't know if this is a dragon thing or an Ed thing, but if it helps anyone, I wanted to share this; Our dragons (Ed and his spawlings) almost ALWAYS head due NORTH. The big boys room is exactly north of their cage. When Ed escaped outside for two weeks (not in a row), he always headed north. We found him in a neighbors yard which is exactly north of ours and once we found him in the far north corner of the yard.

Ed and Junior have had several clutches and some of their babies have found great homes with our friends. Our friends ALSO report that when the dragons escape, they have been found NORTH of their original location.

Odd, but there it is.

Wow! I haven't let my Shacklynn roam unattended--thankfully I haven't lost track of her yet--but she likes to go toward the back hallway, which is North of the living room where her enclosure is!
