My 15" bearded dragon ate a pretty sizable chunk of styrofoam that was right outside his enclosure. It was a round piece of Great Stuff expanding foam, between the size of a nickel and a quarter (but round like a ball, not disc-shaped like a coin). I grabbed him to get it out of his mouth but he immediately swollowed it without chewing.
This happened Friday at 5pm. WORST TIMING EVER. I called the exotic vets around DFW and they told me they couldn't give advice over the phone. One clinic did manage to give me a phone number to an animal emergency hotline.
None of the clinics could tell me whether this was a true emergency needing immediate medical attention (x-rays on Monday, for example) or whether I could wait it out to see if he passes it.
Searched on Google for tips; I tried giving him applesauce but he only licked a bit off his mouth.
I raised his temperatures to 110 F at the highest part of his plank (he has levels and a slope so he can regulate if he feels toasty).
Should I give him a warm bath? Or would added stress be worse for him? (He hates baths)
Should I avoid feeding him or cut down on his dubias? (so if he is blocked up, the blockage doesn't just build in his system)
I hear prunes help a lot. Does anybody know whether I should I get fresh or dried prunes?
What else can I do?
Is it a bad idea to wait and watch his fecal rate to see if:
A) he's impacted from the foam
B) he passes the foam on his own
Lastly, does anyone know whether the foam can be dissolved naturally by a bearded dragon's stomach?
Behavior-wise, it hasn't been long enough to tell if he's lethargic or anorexic. When I walked in this morning, though, he had his beard extended like he was uncomfortable. It didn't seem black, but it was a strange orange color and there were actually streaks of black around his ear. Very few stress marks.
Thanks in advance if anyone has advice.
