beard turned black

Our dragon is about 7 months old, and has always seemed really healthy. This morning I put in crickets and superworms--he gobbled them up--but I noticed that his beard had turned black (I mean really black). What could this mean? I've never seen this happen; it has me freaked out...it's my son's pet, and he's really concerned. Thanks

How long did it stay black? Bearded dragons got their name from their ability to turn their chin/neck/chest area jet black. If your dragon is a male then its most likely he just discovered he is macho and its nothing to worry about. He may also start head bobbing and/or stomping, its normal male display.
They can also get black beards/tails when sick or in pain but its usually accompanied by lethargy and other general signs of not feeling well.
