baby beardie shy of eating in front of me.

Does anyone have a beardie that does not eat while your watching them? Mine eats when I am not around. I shut the bedroom door so my cat will not get to him and its the only time he eats or if he thinks I am not watching him. I opened up the door today and caught him in the bowl with repti-worms eating, and as soon as he saw me he quit eating and jumped out of the bowl. Is this something they will get over? I have only had him about 4 days now. He is really starting to explore the tank and likes it, everything is going fine, just wondering about being shy eating in front of someone. thanks Becky

Most likely he will get over it. I think he is unsure of your position to him. If he feels you are a dominant being then he may stop eating when you are around as he gets more concerned with you instead of the food. Once he figures out you are more of a mommy or daddy to him then he should have no problem eating in front of you. At least this is what I think. If I remember right Ifrit did this when I first got him. As he figured out I mean no threat and as our bond grew he began to have no issues with eating while I was around. Now he doesn't seem to care at all, as long as he gets his feeders. :wink:

thanks , I thought I had a werid berdie, even tho all my animals are like me, not normal. I did catch him/her getting into the bowl of worms with a little butt sticking in the air, I laughed so hard. They sure do have their personalities.

Luna wouldn't eat in front of me for a few days when I first got her. She got over it pretty quick though and figured out if I'm watching that means she gets more crickets when she's finished all the ones I've put in

thank you both. This is the first little beardie I have had. I fell in love with my daughter's 2 beardies and wanted one, but they are really different to figure out. He/she is really starting to move around and will let me put my finger under him and pick him up. The smelling thing just started yesterday so he has my smell and of course I put him up to my cats nose and he did that , scared the poop out of my cat. I just love their personalities so much. I just thought it was funny how he didn't want me to watch him eat. I did catch him drink from his water dish and of course the beardie butt when climbing into his bowl full of worms. I could sit and watch for hours . I have very small crickets for him but he ate them the first morning and now not, so I thought I would try worms just to make sure it gets enough to eat. I try the crickets every day and when it won't eat them I put worms in for the day. I don't want a sick, skinny baby. He/she is only 5-6 weeks old. So tiny and little. Becky

For me it was just the opposite. When I first got my beardie he would eat anything quickly and eat greens out of my hand. Now that he is older he won't eat out of my hand and rarely eats in front of me. He just stares at me instead of the food.
