Archer's thread--new pics on page 4!

Archer is so cute and amazing, i thought i'd make his own thread. i brought him home April 18th. at first i didn't want to handle him until he was settled, so i was referring to him as "the baby." about three days later i eased him out of his tank, but he didn't seem to mind me touching him at all. i held him for a while before finally looking at his tail (thanks google images!) and determined he was male. the name "Archer" had been swimming around in my head since it had a nice ring to it, plus i enjoy the FX show "Archer" (i could listen to H. Jon Benjamin read the phone book--oh that voice!) and thought it could be a good unisex name since it could refer to the title character or his mother. well, as i was looking at the tail and making certain he was a he, he pooped on me. that pretty much settled his naming right there since the cartoon Archer is a jerk (to put it very mildly).

anyway, enjoy some pictures!

(i plan to update it with more pictures as he grows).

this is when i first brought him home:

he was a bit cold from the car ride (and i wasn't sure if he'd be up for being handled yet) so i ripped open his box and let him warm up and crawl out on his own.

he was about 7 inches long when i got him.

Archer likes to stretch his back legs out while basking. i call these his "Lucky Legs." my parents have a weenie dog named Lucky who lays with his hind legs straight back, so it amused me when i caught Archer doing the same (and of course i texted a picture to my mom immediately).

Archer's other favorite place to lay is balanced on my laptop. he even falls asleep up there. it's especially cute when he tries to move across it from one end to the other in this sort of shuffle-sliding movement.

this may not be surprising to anyone here, but i've already fallen in love with Archer. and he's adjusted to life in my home with me, my boyfriend, my turtle, and my kitty quite well. my kitty, Princess, barely notices him. she'll sit by his tank and watch his crickets move around during feeding times, but other than that she doesn't really care that he's here (i've previously owned hamsters and rats which she didn't care about either, so i knew bringing a dragon home would be fine).

oh, and i started keeping a growth chart to keep track of his size. it's been awhile since i last had a baby animal--my cat and turtle have been with me since i was a kid, so i'm excited to watch something grow :D

okay, it's been awhile since I shared some pics of Archer, so here are several:

Archer loves looking out the window, and thinks the screen is for climbing:

i was slightly late with breakfast. he was not pleased:

this is why eating live food sucks:

this is how Princess bonds with Archer--slightly annoyed toleration:

Archer decided my laptop was his bed. he's getting so big now i couldn't type, so i figured i'd play a game instead:

last weekend my boyfriend and i took Archer with us to the beach. these kids were flying kites, and Archer was glaring at them and blackbearding the whole time. the seagulls also made him nervous, but he didn't seem as bothered when he saw me chase them off. i couldn't do anything about the kites though, short of knocking some kids down, and i don't like dealing with irate parents, even when my baby is upset.

Archer didn't take his eyes off the kites the whole time:

Archer loves the beach!

i even went in the water to cool off and had Archer on my shoulder. the water was a bit too cold for him though so i made sure he didn't get wet. or at least i tried. he gave me the stink-eye every time a wave got him slightly wet.

it was awesome though because we had several swimmers come over and see him. one guy even asked if he could ask me questions about Archer, and i gave him the whole beardie 101 speech. oh, and one girl even ran out of the water as i was walking and chased me down the beach so she could see Archer (took me a second to realize that she was shouting to get my attention--i generally tune people out).

i think Archer likes all the attention, but i've noticed something that's been bothering me and maybe other beardie owners have noticed this too: whenever someone asks about Archer it's always, what type of reptile is he, how old, how big will he get, what does he eat, etc. Not once has anyone asked me what his name is, and only one person called him by name after i called him by name. people generally ask what a person's cat or dog is named, but no one ever asks about Archer unless it's one of my friends meeting him for the first time. i'm glad people are so interested in him when we're out in public, but it sort of annoys me that he's just an interesting thing on my shoulder and not an actual member of my family. does this happen to anyone else?

Everyone asks me if Clovis bites when they see her! The kids at my middle schools all love her though, and when they see me doing my speech therapy rounds they always ask after her by name and want to know if she has come to school with me! People do not always look at reptiles the same way as mammals, but in my experience so far beardies tend to delight and fascinate people, especially with multiple exposures. ;)

I bet Archer thought the kites were eagles and was scared of them.

Its the oppiset -"spelling" way at my house the budgie is scarded of the beardie!

I took Yoshi to work with me yesterday and got the same reaction. The only people that really asked his name were the customers that had or were interested in getting a beardie. One old lady even walked by me and went, "Ewww!". I wanted to tell her that she probably has ugly kids too.

ugh i hate when Archer gets the "eww" reaction. even if lizards aren't your thing, it's still rude. this is my pet for crying out loud! i think he's adorable and precious, and definitely cuter than most kids lol.

the fat weenie dog is my parents' dog Precious. she likes to pout in front of her bowl. i caught Archer doing the same recently and decided to juxtapose the two images. and for added understanding of the piece, both photos were taken POST dinner. which should add to the sadness of their plight. lol. or not really (the bellies give them away).

excellent photos! Your commentary is perfect and makes me smile as I read through them. I love Archer's sexy leg pose :) Did you crochet his blanket as well? I've just learned to crochet this year, and I can't wait until I can start making some more useful things other than pot holders and wash clothes.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
