Early June 2007, I got my first bearded dragon Bruce, as a birthday present. I'd know I was going to get a reptile for weeks, and as the day drew closer I just got more anxious! My dad actually took me to the pet store to reserve a dragon, but they had just sold their only dragon two days earlier. So, we just went back home an decided to wait until after I got back from a school trip to get my beardie.
The very next day after I got home was the day I got Bruce, a male bearded dragon. The shop keeper said he'd been dropped of with a gang of brothers and sisters a few weeks before. He's missing four of his toes on his back left foot. He was a little nervous the day we brought him home, we all huddled around him and I got bit on the thumb. Didn't really hurt, after all he was just a 6 week old baby. Bruce, didn't take him long to become a huge part of mine, and my family's life. He was obviously the perfect pet for me. He grew extremely quick, after just a month or two he'd doubled in size, my once five inch baby was not a twelve inch monster! He gradually became used to me holding him, as I did so often. Even as I am typing this now I have him out on my shirt, listening to Cats in the Cradle and look, he's asleep. Bruce is an awesome pet and so is the little present I brought home in September 07'!
In mid September, the day the new Mac OX Leopard operating system was released we got Betty! We were making a routine trip to a pet store out on 9 mile for some crickets. As I always do, I look at the animals talk to the birds and beg my dad for another pet. We as always he said no to the bearded dragon they had there but the shop keeper was able to talk him into it. They were having to get rid of all their reptiles because they were redoing the reptile section of the store, and had no where to put their current reptiles accept new homes. So, $90 came out of my bank account and we just forgot about the crickets, I said heck, they'll survive on lettuce for a week. When we got Betty home I tried telling my mom it was just a box of crickets, but she knew I wouldn't take crickets into my room so by then she had it figured out. Now it began.
I introduced Betty to Bruce, we only had one cage at the time so they lived with each other until June 08'. Bruce took to her well, did the usual male "I am dominant" stuff, but that didn't last. Within a week Betty was the ruler of the cage she got his basking spot and ended up eating more too. I'd take Bruce out and hand feed him every-so-often making sure he was full. Boy, she was a little devil, but they loved each other. Over the next eight months they slept, played and mated with each other... Come May 6, 2008 Betty laied the first of he four clutches of eggs. The next month I separated them so this wouldn't happen again.
Well, it worked but they're back together making room for the babies in Bruce's cage. During the few months they were apart Bruce would seem to dig to get to her because she was right below him and he figured that out when I would take them out. I knew he wanted to be with her, she also wanted to be with him. So, here they are back together with their 12 babies, four of which died and two were sold. They both have their spots in the cage, Bruce generally takes the hallowed out log and Betty goes where ever. Bruce sleeps all day, Betty scratches the glass at night. They are both so different I just wonder how they seem to get along so well, they've never fought. They even sleep together on their hammock, either next to each other or her on top of him, or the other way around.
