A memorial for Jasper

A note from Alex: Jasper, one of the more well known beardies of one of the more long-standing members of the site, Sandi, has recently passed away. The moderators and I agreed that a special memorial was a good idea.

Sometime in the beginning of 2005, a bearded dragon was brought into a veterinarians office with some severe problems, he was about one year old and had lived his life up until that time without UVB and survived on a diet that consisted of dog food. By the time his owners had taken him to the vet, this little beardie had a bad case of MBD. Being that these people felt that the money they would have to shell out was too much they decided to just leave this guy with the vet. The vet was very caring and decided to do what he could for him, he ended up having to amputate all of his tail and most of his left rear foot. Enter Sandi. She must have fallen in love with the strength and will to live this little guy had because he wiggled his way into her heart and he found his permanent, forever home. This sweet beardie became Jasper.

Sandi quickly learned what a character her little boy was when he fell asleep one night on her shoulder just to have him start head-bobbing at something that only he could see as he was still fast asleep. It must have been a bad dream from the past because what Jasper found with Sandi was bliss. She had quickly spoiled this amazing boy by hand feeding him, although his heart was in the right place as a hunter he had decided that this was the only way he was going to eat. Jasper became slave master to Sandi, but I don't think she was complaining.

Instead of seeing Jasper as a beardie without a tail, Sandi humorously saw his stump as a built-in stool in which he always had at his disposal...in fact, whenever Jasper sat this way on his "stool" Sandi felt like wiping down his log with a bar towel and offering him a tiny rye and coke!!!!!!

jasper14-1.jpg

Not all was smiles and giggles with Jasper, he had problems with his tail that had been amputated, problems with parasites, and recovery was just a long road, but they did it. Jasper soon became comfortable and curious enough to want to trek out on his own to explore his new surroundings. He must have learned that his tail and foot was not a hindrance to him as he would take off on his own to find mischief wherever he could. One of his favorite pastimes was to run through the salad that Sandi would leave for him before going to work, only to return home and find salad strewn from one end of his home to the other, and even find a food encrusted Jasper sitting there looking at her as if to say "This is my playground, I'll roll in those raspberries and silkworms whenever I want to, Woman!"

Jasper was the type of beardie that loved to help out around the house, whenever Sandi would fold laundry it wasn't too surprising to find Jasper in the pile of warm clothes helping with this chore the best he knew how - snuggling.
Jasper had other talents as well, many people didn't know that Jasper was a Barry White fan and would croon to the cuties songs in his deep Barry White-like voice songs such as "Hey beautiful ladies. Who's the smoothest, sexiest, most flexible dragon on the forum? Let me bend your body and blow your mind! I love the beautiful beardie babes." That was Jasper alright. But there was another side to Jasper, he could be a grump - yes, I said it, Grump with a capital G! He could shoot a black beard at you like no other beardie but Sandi knew that this was all a bluff, Jasper really was a softie.

S6300177.jpg

He was also a prankster, imagine Sandi's horror when she looked up to find that her beardie had just disappeared into thin air!!!

IMG_3608.jpg

Jasper became a champion to many. The story of the beginning of his life helped to raise awareness of the damage that poor husbandry could do while inspiring others struggling to help their beardies overcome similar illnesses. His painful beginning was not in vain as his story saved so many other beardies from facing the same fate. He filled our hearts with awe and inspiration. Jasper was a true bearded hero and just as the story of his first year brought tears to our eyes they were soon filled with joy and laughter as his "grumpy" ways inspired many a story or photo that could lighten the spirit of even the darkest soul. His passing does not mark the end of Jasper as his story will continue to inspire others to strive to give their beardies the best possible care and Jasper will no doubt save even more lives. Jasper, you are a hero and you will live in our hearts forever.

Wow,what a beautiful memorial for Jasper.I am crying my eyes out right now

Alex,Sherri, and all the mods: you guys are so wonderful and caring to do this for Sandi and Jasper.
This site is not just a forum of strangers talking about beardies, but it's a "home" filled with family that is always there for each other.I will never forget how you were all there for me too when Chris passed away. It meant the world to me to have that support and I will never forget it!

Sandi: ((((BIG HUGS)))) to you,I am so sorry :( When the time is right I know Jasper would want you to open your heart to another beardie and love it just like you loved and spoiled him.
Can you post some more pics of Jasper please? I always loved seeing pics of him, especially the one in his cape.
I understand if it would be too difficult for you right now though :(

PS:Diane, that is a beautiful picture you posted!

Kudos to the mods for posting this! Gorgeous memorial and very touching! It is nice to see the Beardie comminity coming together to comfort each other and support one another like this. I am truely honored to call this forum my 'Beardie Family'.

Sandi> I love the pictures you always posted of good old Jasper. He and Redrock were the first beardies I remember reading about when I joined the site. It's always hard to lose and old friend, even harder when it is your best friend. He might be just a beardie, but I love my grandma's saying.

"Everyone and every creature is a flower in the Lord's garden. At one point, there is a time where everyone and every creature become the most beautiful in His garden and are picked because this is so."

You have mine, Austin and Squirrel's sympathy and thoughts in this time of grief and loss in your life. May you soon heal from this hard blow and find strength in knowing that Jasper is watching over you even now, waiting for the moment when he will be reunited with you.

I am so sorry to hear for your loss. Jasper played a major role in my interest in having a bearded draon. For two years I was not allowed to bring a bearded dragon into my house, so in the absence of my own beardie, I would surf the photo and beardie tales forum to fulfill my fixation. It was here that I fell in love with that lump o scales. It got so bad that my friends would plead with me to go one day without talking about them. Jasper truly was a great bearded dragon. I am so glad that you had the privelage to own him!

Wow... just wow. Thank you so much. I will definitely post some pictures of him as soon as I get the chance. I don't know how many people read my blog, but I had posted there about almost getting fired because I didn't go into work the day that Jasper died. I called and let them know in the morning, but they still came very close to letting me go because of my 'unexcused absence'. Between Jasper dying and almost getting fired, this has been one of the worst weeks of my life. It's such a relief to come here and feel accepted and understood.

Thanks y'all. My gramma was truely a gentle and wise woman and it was with her guidance that I have come to have the way with words that I do. I had just hoped to help y'all make Sandi feel better and I'm glad we were all able to do so. It seems we have truely made a difference for her in this difficult week.

Sandi> It is always a relief to find people who understand either what you are going through and people willing to help you through it. I'm glad I helped with doing so. Just remember, here we are family and there's always an ear open to lend comfort and support. And sometimes, that's all that is really needed. *hugs tight*

Hi Sandi,

After reading all the other comments, I have to tell you this little bit. I remember my son telling me when he was about five years old. He was looking thoughtful, and I asked what he was thinking about. His answer floored me, " I remember before I was born, and God and I were watching you and Dad, and decided you would make the best parents for me." Jasper came to you this same way, because he knew you were the best parent for him, and I am sure he and God are helping another little beardie plan the best route to your home. When it's right, it happens! Love and hugs from all of us here!

Your grammy is wise beyond words, to take a terrible tragedy and turn it into a beautiful plan of God is just amazing. Ask her if she minds if I borrow that to tell my grandchildren? :)

lizardgrrl, your son is just as wise, he hadn't forgotten about choosing you!!!!! That is so sweet.

Diane, that's a beautiful picture, I can really believe that that is what it will look like. :)

I agree with Michele, Jasper will be very glad when you are finally able to open up your heart to another beardie!

Hope you are doing better after the terrible week. I read your blog about getting flowers at work and you having to put them in the car. Sometimes, when it rains, it pours. One tiny thing can send you over the edge after losing such a huge part of your life.

Whether your friend is a dog, a cat, a hamster, a bird, a beardie, it doesn't matter. They all touch our hearts. Animal lovers have a special heart that gets really attached. I think that sometimes I get too attached. But then again, I look back at all the love I have gotten from each and every pet that I have ever had.

When they leave us, there is a whole in our hearts and our lives.

I am sorry that you had some trouble at work. That does not make it any easier to get past the extreme hurt that you are feeling. Only time makes it better, but just know that we all grieve with you. Almost like ... we can feel the pain you feel in your loss.

Looking forward to seeing more pictures of Jasper. I love the ones that I have seen of him so far! Thanks for sharing him with us!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
